Somalia trains journalists to counter Al-Shabaab propaganda and disinformation

Somalia's government, with support from the Islamic Military Counter-Terrorism Coalition and Saudi Arabia, has launched a programme to train journalists and social media producers in countering extremist propaganda and disinformation. The initiative, known as Peace Journalists, was unveiled in Mogadishu and includes a specialised training course for 40 participants. Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi and IMCTC Secretary-General Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Moghedi attended the launch, stressing the need for media to play a role beyond military operations.

China-bound vessel with 24 crew members sinks 200 nautical miles off Odisha’s Paradip port

The Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Ocean Winner sank in the Bay of Bengal on August 22 after losing communication roughly 200 to 240 nautical miles off Paradip, Odisha. Two Chinese crew members were pulled from liferafts by a merchant tanker as the Indian Coast Guard and Navy searched for the remaining 22 of a 24-person multinational crew. The cause of the sinking has not been established.

DCOC States Agree On Combined Anti-Piracy Task Force

Signatory States of the Djibouti Code of Conduct/Jeddah Amendment have agreed to set up a Combined DCoC Task Force to coordinate maritime operations against piracy in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden. The decision, endorsed at an extraordinary Steering Committee meeting in July and by National Focal Points in August, aims to complement existing international efforts while addressing the continued captivity of seafarers.

Take it, it’s yours - Estonia handed over 11 illegal migrants to Latvia

Estonia has handed over 27 migrants to Latvia under a bilateral agreement, including 11 who were transferred this week. The migrants, from Somalia, Ethiopia, Morocco, and Eritrea, are reported to have entered illegally via Belarus and Latvia, with many aiming to reach other Schengen countries. Estonian authorities are also working to verify the ages of nearly half of the new arrivals who claim to be minors.
