South Africans looking to travel abroad have more options than they might expect, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. The index, compiled by Henley & Partners, shows that South African passport holders can access 101 destinations without needing to obtain a visa in advance.

Ranking and Global Context

The Henley Passport Index evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without a prior visa. Reports on South Africa's exact ranking differ: one report places the country 50th globally, while another cites a ranking of 96th out of 199 passports. Both reports agree on the visa-free score of 101.

According to the index, South Africa's passport sits between Türkiye, which offers access to 112 destinations, and Belize, which also has 101. The index covers 199 passports and 227 travel destinations, making it a widely cited measure of global mobility.

Regional Access

The visa-free destinations span Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. Closer to home, South Africans can travel to Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Mozambique, Mauritius, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe without a traditional visa.

Further afield, popular destinations include Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Singapore, the Philippines, and South Korea. In the Caribbean and Americas, options include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The regional breakdown for visa-free access is Africa 31, Americas 17, Asia 17, Caribbean 17, Europe 2, Middle East 7, and Oceania 10.

Categories of Access

The 101 destinations fall into three main travel categories: Visa-Free Access, Visa on Arrival, and Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Visa-free access means travellers can present their passport at immigration without an advance application, while visa-on-arrival and ETA options require different levels of pre-travel preparation.

Global Leaders and Laggards

According to the index, Singapore holds the most powerful passport, with visa-free access to 192 destinations. Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates each offer access to 188 destinations, and Sweden ranks fifth with a score of 187.

At the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan remains the lowest-ranked passport, with access to only 22 destinations without a prior visa.

Factors Behind the Rankings

The Henley Passport Index is widely used as a benchmark for global mobility. Rankings reflect a range of factors, including diplomatic relations, international agreements, and security considerations, all of which influence visa policies between countries.

Travellers are advised to check the latest entry requirements with each destination's official government or tourism website before booking, as visa policies can change and may involve costs or specific rules regarding length of stay, passport validity, proof of onward travel, and accommodation.
