Instagram Overhauls AI Labeling

Instagram is updating how it labels artificial intelligence-generated content on its platform, replacing the existing 'AI creator' designation with a new 'AI-generated profile' label. The change is designed to make it clearer to users when a profile features an AI-generated person rather than a real human, according to a blog post from the Meta-owned platform.

"This update builds on the learnings of the AI creator label we began testing earlier this year. As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we've heard that people don't like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated. They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person," Instagram stated.

Reach Restrictions for Unlabeled Profiles

Under the new policy, profiles that present a full-on AI-generated person are required to apply the 'AI-generated profile' label. Accounts that fail to do so could face reduced recommendation reach, as reported by India TV News and The Hindu. The restriction applies only to unlabeled AI profiles; creators who voluntarily add the label will not lose reach.

Creators who previously used the 'AI creator' label will see it automatically updated to 'AI-generated profile'. They can review the label in their profile settings and choose to keep it or remove it if they are no longer using an AI-generated persona.

Instagram clarified that the label is not required for users who merely employ AI tools to edit photos or write captions; it is specifically intended for accounts that feature an AI-generated character.

Appeals and System Limitations

For those who face restrictions, Instagram provides a mechanism to appeal. Users will be notified within their Account Status if they have lost recommendation eligibility, and they can either add the label or appeal the decision. The platform acknowledged that its systems are not perfect, leaving room for potential errors in flagging.

Spotify Follows Suit

Instagram is not alone in tightening rules around AI personas. Spotify is also introducing 'AI Personas' labels starting mid-September, as reported by The Hindu. The streaming company stated that listeners do not like being deceived by AI artists.

"Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don't like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated," the company said. Spotify will exclude AI Personas from editorial and algorithmic recommendations.
