Instagram tightens rules on AI-generated profiles
Instagram has introduced a new 'AI-generated profile' label for accounts that feature an AI-generated person, and will limit the reach of such profiles if creators do not disclose their AI nature. The policy, announced on August 31, is part of a broader effort to increase transparency about AI-generated content on the platform.
Under the new rules, creators can add the label by editing their profile and switching on the AI-generated profile option. The label will appear on the profile and alongside content where the individual post or media does not already carry an AI label. According to The Economic Times, Instagram is renaming its existing 'AI creator' label to 'AI-generated profile' to make the distinction clearer for users.
Reach restrictions and appeals
Creators who do not label their AI-generated profiles could lose recommendation reach, meaning their posts may not reach a wider audience or could become harder to discover, as reported by Business Today. Instagram said accounts it detects as featuring an AI-generated person without the label will be notified. They can then check their Account Status to see whether their profile has been made ineligible for recommendations.
Creators have two ways to restore their recommendation eligibility: add the AI-generated profile label or appeal Instagram's decision if they believe the restriction was applied incorrectly. The platform is also providing users with ways to challenge the decision, with the appeal process available through the Account Status section, as noted by Business Today.
Company rationale and context
An Instagram spokesperson said, "We've heard from our community that they don't like coming across a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated." The spokesperson added that Instagram may "limit the reach" of posts that do not use the label.
The move is intended to bring transparency across the platform around AI-generated content and help users distinguish between genuine human influencers and AI-generated personalities, according to Business Today. The Economic Times reported that Meta started expanding its AI content identification in May 2024 after its Oversight Board recommended labelling rather than removal.
Instagram distinguishes between AI-generated profiles and creators who use AI as part of their creative process. The company said, "If you are using AI as part of your creative process, you do not need to add the profile-level label."
Scale of AI labelling
Between October 1 and October 29, 2024, Instagram recorded more than 330 million pieces of content with the AI label that received at least one user label view, according to The Economic Times. That included more than 140 million posts and more than 220 million reels. The same source reported that Instagram users generated more than 1 trillion AI label views during the same period, with over 60 million actions on the label.
