Record-Breaking Saturday at the Iowa State Fair

Saturday, Aug. 22, proved to be a historic day at the 2026 Iowa State Fair. The fair reported attendance of 130,654 for Day 10 of the 11-day event, setting not only a record for that day but also the all-time single-day attendance record. The previous all-time daily record was 128,732, set in 2024, while the prior Day 10 benchmark was 123,140, set in 2022.

The record-breaking crowd raised the fair's total attendance through Saturday to 1,114,985. That figure leaves the 2026 fair just 67,697 short of the 2024 all-time total attendance record of 1,182,682. The average daily attendance so far was 111,499, according to the Ames Tribune.

Path to the All-Time Record

As of Friday, the Des Moines Register reported 114,256 people on Aug. 21, setting a new record for Day 9 and putting the fair 198,352 short of the 2024 total before the final weekend. With the Saturday number now reported, the larger picture has come into focus: if attendance on the final Saturday and Sunday merely matched the average of the first nine days — 109,370 per day — the fair would surpass the 2024 record by 20,829, pushing the total past 1.2 million.

Sunday's weather is expected to be cooperative. The Register forecasts a high near 81 degrees, calling conditions "as fair-friendly as it gets in an Iowa August." The Ames Tribune describes Sunday as partly cloudy with a high just below 80, while the Des Moines Register's daily guide notes a slightly cooler high near 78 degrees. The only potential for rain comes early Monday, as vendors pack up.

The final official attendance report, including Sunday's crowd, is scheduled for Monday. With the favorable conditions, both outlets express confidence in a new record.

Multiple Record Days in 2026

The 2026 fair has set a remarkable number of daily records. As of Saturday, the fair holds four daily attendance records: Day 4 (Aug. 16, 123,140), Day 5 (Aug. 17, 111,159), Day 9 (Aug. 21, 114,256), and Day 10 (Aug. 22, 130,654). The previous all-time-most-attended fair in 2024 holds records for only two days. Both the Ames Tribune and the Des Moines Register confirm that the fair began Thursday, Aug. 13, with a drenching downpour and the cancellation of headliner Rod Stewart's show on Aug. 14.

Historical Context

If the 2026 fair indeed sets an all-time attendance record, it will join a distinguished list. The most attended fairs in recent years include 2024 (1,182,682), 2019 (1,170,375), 2025 (1,160,121), and 2023 (1,133,938). The 2026 fair, through Saturday, had drawn 45,136 fewer than 2025's total. Since the 2020 cancellation due to COVID-19, five of the six fairs held will be in the all-time top 10 if 2026 breaks the mark.

2019 ranks No. 2 on the all-time list, and other top-10 years include 2018, 2017, 2015, 2008, and 2012. The 2021 fair ranked 11th, just outside the top 10. The Des Moines Register also notes that the Minnesota State Fair has held the top average daily attendance among U.S. state fairs for the past three years, partly due to the inclusion of the Labor Day holiday in its final weekend.

Sunday, Aug. 23, is the final day of the fair, and the Des Moines Register's guide highlights several recommended events: Bunny Yoga at 9 a.m., the Cribbage Tournament at 11 a.m., the Mother-Daughter Look-A-Like Contest at 1 p.m., the Bill Riley Talent Finals at 1:30 p.m., and the Heart of Iowa Cloggers at 3:30 p.m.
