Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando have each been fined 25 per cent of their match fees and handed one demerit point by the ICC after their heated altercation on the opening day of the second Test in Colombo. Both players were found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to inappropriate physical contact, according to reports from the ICC website. Both players admitted to the breaches and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, with neither having any previous offence in the preceding 24 months.

The incident occurred in the 17th over of India's innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45. The ICC release described how Jaiswal walked towards Fernando and the two exchanged words, after which Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. In response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in head-to-head contact. The altercation was the climax of a tense exchange that began with Fernando's animated send-off.

Padikkal and Gill Steady India's Innings

The day's play was headlined by Devdutt Padikkal's century, his second in as many Tests, which helped India to a formidable 300/5 at stumps on day one. Padikkal, who was dropped twice on zero and one, scored 117 off 193 balls, anchoring the Indian innings. He was well supported by captain Shubman Gill, with the pair adding a crucial 120-run partnership for the third wicket. Gill contributed 50 before being dismissed by Fernando just before tea. Gill's innings also saw him complete 3,000 Test runs, becoming the fourth-youngest Indian to reach the milestone at 26 years and 349 days, a list led by Sachin Tendulkar.

Earlier, India had won the toss and elected to bat, with opener KL Rahul dismissed for 18. Jaiswal, who had struck three consecutive boundaries off Fernando earlier in the over, was the other wicket to fall as Sri Lanka struck twice in the opening session, leaving the visitors at 88/2 at lunch.

Pant Injury Scare Adds to India's Concerns

India's progress was further marred by an injury to Rishabh Pant, who was forced to retire hurt on 3 after being struck on the left wrist by a short delivery from Lahiru Kumara in the 58th over. Pant, who received on-field treatment, subsequently left the field with Ravindra Jadeja coming in as his replacement. The extent of the injury remains unconfirmed.

Jaiswal Responds to Critics

Following the day's play, the focus shifted to the Jaiswal-Fernando confrontation. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak urged for understanding, saying, “I think they must have said something to him and it might have happened in the heat of the moment. Obviously, Jaiswal, I don't think he should have been so close (to Fernando)”, as quoted in a post-day press conference. Sri Lanka's fast bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk added, “The verbals are probably an overflow of emotion. I'll leave that to the match referee to deal with.”

Jaiswal himself broke his silence on the incident by commenting on a Cricbuzz Instagram video featuring commentator Harsha Bhogle. "If you don't know what he said then please don't make your judgment if anyone cross the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply," Jaiswal wrote. This came after Bhogle suggested in the video that Jaiswal had been provoked but should have walked away. Former players also weighed in, with Ajay Jadeja stating, "Physical contact is a different thing," and Venkatesh Prasad of the view that Jaiswal should have simply walked away.
