Wrexham have mutually terminated the contract of midfielder Elliot Lee with immediate effect, bringing an end to a three-year association during which the 31-year-old became a fan favourite and a key figure in the club's remarkable climb through the football pyramid.
Lee arrived at the Welsh club from Luton Town in 2022 and quickly established himself as a central figure in what has been described as a meteoric rise. He played a key role in the club's three consecutive promotions, taking Wrexham from the National League to the Championship. In total, Lee made 152 appearances for the club, scoring 41 goals across all competitions.
His performances did not go unnoticed. Lee was selected in the 2022/23 National League Team of the Year, and the following season he was named in the League Two Team of the Season and the Professional Footballers' Association Team of the Year.
However, as Wrexham's standing in the football pyramid rose, Lee's game time diminished. He made just three appearances last season, all in the EFL Cup, and was subsequently loaned to Doncaster Rovers, where he played 18 times.
Parkinson's tribute and a desire to play
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson paid an emotional tribute to Lee following the departure, highlighting the midfielder's contribution to the club's success and acknowledging his desire for more regular football.
"I'd like to thank Elliot for what he has done for this football club," Parkinson said. "He has been a great player for us here at Wrexham and has made a significant contribution to the club's rise through the divisions."
Parkinson added: "He is at the stage now where he is eager to go and play and get some minutes, and whoever gets him will get a player who still has a lot to offer."
Speaking last week, Parkinson had already hinted at the possibility of Lee's departure, saying: "There's clubs who are interested in Elliot, and in the next few days, he's got to decide what he wants to do because he's too good a player not to be playing in my eyes. He thrives on playing, we need to find somewhere for him this week, which suits what he wants."
A free agent with suitors
Lee is now a free agent and, as reported by the South Wales Echo, does not have to complete a move by the 11pm transfer deadline. Sheffield Wednesday are understood to be interested in bringing Lee to Hillsborough, with the League One club plotting an immediate return to the Championship.
The midfielder's departure from Wrexham follows a period in which he slipped down the pecking order after the club's promotion to the Championship. Despite his reduced game time, Lee was the club's top scorer in the 2024/25 season, having registered 15 goals in his first season and 16 in his second.
From West Ham to Wrexham's Hollywood project
Lee, son of former Premier League midfielder Rob Lee, began his career at West Ham United, where he was loaned out on five separate occasions. He was sold to Barnsley before securing a move to Luton 12 months later.
His father, Rob Lee, has revealed how the move to Wrexham came about, describing how he jokingly suggested to Elliot that Ryan Reynolds might ring him with an offer, days before Wrexham made an approach. The midfielder, a huge fan of Reynolds, took the decision to move down to National League level to join the Wrexham project, a move that proved transformative for both the player and the club.
Wrexham, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob MacElhenney, have been active in the transfer market this summer. A £6.5m deal for Sheffield United midfielder Callum O'Hare is expected to be completed on deadline day, according to the South Wales Echo.
