Atlanta United have completed one of the most significant transfers in their history, signing Swiss international forward Breel Embolo from French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais. The club announced the move during the summer transfer window, bringing in the 29-year-old as a Designated Player. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the team is riding a three-game win streak for the first time in five seasons, a run that has offered a glimmer of hope after a difficult campaign.

Embolo addressed the media at his introductory press conference on Tuesday, acknowledging the team's struggles while expressing confidence in his role. "Now, we can say the team is not in the best position," he said. "But I think that's my job to help the team to get there, where it belongs."

The Journal-Constitution noted that Embolo has spent his entire club career in Europe, beginning with Basel's youth academy after immigrating from Cameroon as a young child. He will wear the No. 36 for Atlanta United, the same number he wore at Basel.

A record investment

Sports Illustrated reported the transfer fee as $18 million, making it the fifth-highest incoming transfer in MLS history. The outlet also noted that Atlanta United now holds five of the top-eight incoming transfer fees in the league, underlining the club's willingness to spend big on international talent.

Embolo's pedigree is impressive. According to Sports Illustrated, he has scored 100 goals and recorded 66 assists in 380 professional games for clubs including Rennes, Basel, Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and AS Monaco. For Switzerland, he has netted 26 goals in 92 caps, featuring in three World Cups (2018, 2022, 2026) and three European Championships (2016, 2020, 2024). At the 2026 World Cup, he contributed two goals and two assists as Switzerland reached the quarterfinals.

The club's chief soccer officer and sporting director, Chris Henderson, praised the signing in a statement. "We're pleased to bring a player with Breel's combination of talent and experience at the highest levels of world soccer to Atlanta United," he said. "At age 29, he's coming off a strong performance at the World Cup with Switzerland and has a proven track record of goal contributions in multiple top European leagues. His goal-scoring, ability to link with other players in the attack and tireless work rate are qualities that will strengthen our team from the center forward position."

Context: a team in need of a turnaround

Sports Illustrated described the signing as part of a "typical playbook" for Atlanta United, noting the club's recent history of expensive deals. The team currently sits last in the Eastern Conference with 18 points from 20 games, and has scored just 23 goals in that span—a statistic that highlights the need for attacking reinforcement.

One of the factors behind the move may be the recent departure of striker Emmanuel Latte Lath, who was loaned to Bundesliga side Union Berlin after scoring only nine goals in 44 games. Latte Lath had been a then-record $22 million signing for the club, as reported by Sports Illustrated. The outlet also noted that attendance has declined from over 50,000 in 2016–2018 to an average of 37,720 in 2026, suggesting a broader concern about fan engagement.

Embolo is the fourth top-10 transfer fee deal in MLS in 2026, joining moves such as Josh Sargent to Toronto FC and André Luiz to Sporting Kansas City, according to Sports Illustrated. The outlet also observed that previous high-profile signings have had mixed results: while players like Almada and Almirón have succeeded, Latte Lath and Barco have underwhelmed.

As Atlanta United look to climb the standings, the arrival of a proven World Cup scorer offers both a potential boost and a significant financial commitment. Whether Embolo can replicate his international form in MLS remains to be seen, but the club is clearly betting on his ability to change the trajectory of their season.
