Conservationists and Maasai communities are calling for urgent answers as a mysterious illness spreads among elephants in southern Kenya's Amboseli ecosystem. At least 20 elephants have died since June, according to multiple reports, with the latest victim being an 11-year-old male named Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan was found lying on the ground in the Kitenden B reserve, unable to stand and struggling to breathe. Veterinarians administered a glucose injection—one of the few options available—but he died on Tuesday after repeatedly trying and failing to get back on his feet. The deaths have affected mostly females and young males, with animals displaying strikingly similar symptoms, including weakness and partial paralysis.
The Amboseli ecosystem, a major tourist destination overlooked by Mount Kilimanjaro, is home to elephant herds that draw visitors from around the world. Patrick Papatiti, head of operations for the Olgulului communal lands, which include the Kitenden B reserve, says the deaths remain a mystery. He noted that hyenas and vultures have fed on the carcasses without showing signs of poisoning, leading him to believe the elephants are suffering from a disease rather than poisoning. "There's no way cyanide could explain the pattern of deaths," he said.
Joel Nyika, the Amboseli ecosystem manager for Kajiado County, also dismissed the chemical theory, arguing that scavengers feeding on the remains would likely have been affected if toxins were present. The Kenya Wildlife Service affirmed that its findings to date do not indicate an infectious or transmissible disease, but the cause remains unidentified.
Local Communities Seek Answers
The deaths have broader implications for local farmers and residents. Noah Saatia, a farmer and chairman of the Kimana community, said residents consider elephants an asset and want authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation. AFP journalists observed six carcasses in the Kimana reserve, including a young calf and a pregnant female whose unborn calf also died—a stark reminder of the toll on the elephant population.
Conservationist Paula Kahumbu has also highlighted a lack of evidence supporting the pesticide theory. Patrick Papatiti fears that the actual death may be underestimated, and the same affliction could be affecting elephants in neighboring Tanzania. The situation remains under investigation, with no clear cause identified as of late August.
