PSG Land Torres in High-Profile Move
Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of Spain international Ferran Torres from Barcelona, the club announced on Saturday. The 26-year-old forward, who scored the only goal in last month's World Cup final, has agreed to a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 champions, with the transfer fee reported at 50 million euros ($58m).
Torres, who previously worked with PSG coach Luis Enrique at international level, expressed his excitement at the move.
"I'd like to thank President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, [PSG's football advisor] Luis Campos and coach Luis Enrique for giving me the opportunity to join the team," Torres said in a statement. "I'm delighted to be beginning a new adventure at such an ambitious club as Paris St Germain."
The former Valencia and Manchester City star, nicknamed "The Shark," joined Barcelona in the 2021/22 season and scored 65 goals in 207 appearances, helping the club win three La Liga titles, including the 2025 Copa del Rey final victory over Real Madrid. In his final season at Barcelona, Torres netted 21 goals and provided three assists in 49 matches as the club retained their league title.
Barcelona expressed gratitude for Torres's commitment over four and a half seasons.
PSG's Title Ambitions and Squad Strengthening
PSG, who have won the last two editions of the Champions League and are overwhelming favourites for a sixth successive Ligue 1 title, have been boosted by Torres's arrival. Coach Luis Enrique praised the forward's versatility.
"Ferran is an international-level player," Enrique said. "He fits perfectly with what we're looking for. He can play anywhere in attack, with a great mentality."
The club have also brought in Maghnes Akliouche and Lucas Digne, both part of France's World Cup squad, as well as Belgian winger Mika Godts, signed this week from Ajax Amsterdam.
Pitch Concerns Force Opener Relocation
PSG have been forced to move their Ligue 1 opener against Stade Rennais on Sunday after scorching summer heat left the Parc des Princes pitch unsafe, the club said. A specialist team inspected the playing surface and ruled it unfit for play, and the match will now take place at Rennes' Roazhon Park.
A person familiar with the matter told Reuters that extreme heat prevented the grass, which PSG grows from seed rather than installing as rolled turf, from developing properly. The stadium's concrete structure intensified the conditions, the person added.
Ligue 1 Landscape Shifts
PSG suffered a rare defeat in last weekend's Trophée des Champions against Racing Lens, who finished second last season, six points adrift of the champions. Lens, who also won the French Cup, have appointed Dino Toppmöller as their new coach.
Elsewhere, Lille have brought in Davide Ancelotti as coach, Monaco have signed Filipe Luis and offloaded Paul Pogba, and Marseille are rebuilding under Bruno Genesio. Troyes and Le Mans are the newly promoted sides, replacing Nantes and Metz, while Nice retained their top-flight status.
The transfer window remains open, and Torres's arrival at PSG could have further implications across Europe, with reports suggesting it may boost Liverpool's hopes of signing PSG forward Bradley Barcola, who is valued at around 150 million euros ($173m).
