A woman stabbed two people in New York City's Times Square on Monday evening, killing a 32-year-old woman and injuring a 68-year-old man, before she was fatally shot by police, according to the New York Police Department. The incident occurred near an NYPD substation, just outside One Times Square, the building that hosts the city's annual New Year's Eve ball drop celebration.

Police said the woman pulled two knives from a shopping bag and stabbed the man in the abdomen first, then quickly turned and stabbed the woman in the abdomen. Both victims were taken to hospitals; the 32-year-old woman later died, and the 68-year-old man is in stable condition, according to police.

Sequence of Events

The attack took place at 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, police said. The suspect, described by authorities as emotionally disturbed, fled north toward an NYPD substation, where officers confronted her. Police said she was armed with two large kitchen knives when they encountered her.

Videos posted on social media show a group of at least 10 officers gathered around the woman, who was holding the knives. At least one officer attempted to subdue her with a Taser, but it did not incapacitate her, the videos show. The woman then walked quickly toward the officers while waving the knives in front of her, according to the video. As one officer backed up, he and at least two others pulled their handguns, and the sound of gunshots could be heard.

The woman fell to the ground, where an officer handcuffed her. Officers then rolled her onto her back and rendered first aid. She was taken to a hospital, where she died during treatment, police said.

TMZ reported, citing police, that the woman, aged 49, threatened to kill officers while advancing toward them with a knife, prompting them to open fire. The New York Post, as cited by TMZ, reported that one of the two stabbing victims later died from their injuries.

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal confirmed the stabbings in a post on the social platform X. The NYPD closed part of Seventh Avenue and warned the public to stay away from the area as officers investigated. Police cordoned off the area with tape, and a large group of law enforcement officers worked nearby.

Police said no terror-related angle was suspected in the incident, and the suspect appeared to be emotionally disturbed. The investigation is ongoing.
