Police investigate reported rape in Weymouth alleyway

Dorset Police have launched an investigation after a woman in her 20s was allegedly raped in an alleyway in Weymouth town centre on Monday night. The attack is reported to have occurred in the area of New Street and Blockhouse Lane, close to the seafront and behind the main shopping centre.

The force said it received a report at 10.46pm on Monday, August 31, and officers cordoned off the scene to allow for detailed investigative work. The victim is being supported by officers, and no arrests have been made at this time.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said: "Dorset Police received a report at 10.46pm on Monday 31 August 2026 that a woman aged in her 20s had been raped in New Street in Weymouth. Extensive enquiries are under way to establish what happened and officers have been speaking to the victim and providing support to them. A cordon was put in place at the scene to allow for detailed investigative work to be carried out. No arrests have been made at this time."

The spokesperson added: "There will be an increased police presence in the area. We would urge anyone with concerns to please speak with an officer."

The area was reported to be busy with people enjoying Bank Holiday Monday, and the last firework display of the summer season took place that night.

Weymouth's mayor, Councillor David Harris, said the incident was "very distressing". He said: "It is very distressing to hear of something like this happening. I know the police are doing a lot of work to keep the town safe, but sometimes something like this does happen. These incidents are always distressing. My thoughts are with the person who this has affected, and I hope that whoever is responsible is caught."

Police have urged anyone with concerns to speak to an officer, and an increased presence will remain in the area while enquiries continue.
