A 22-year-old woman was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Sixth Avenue in Manhattan's West Village early Sunday, according to police.
The collision occurred just before 5 a.m. at the intersection of West Washington Place and Sixth Avenue, police sources told AM New York. The victim was walking westbound on West Washington Place in the south crosswalk, crossing over to Sixth Avenue, when she was hit by an unidentified gray vehicle, according to the same account. The New York Daily News reported that the vehicle was traveling uptown when it struck her.
The force of the impact caused a severe head injury, police said. A witness called 911, and emergency medical services rushed the woman to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to AM New York, citing police sources. The Daily News reported she died at the hospital after suffering severe head trauma.
The driver fled the scene northbound on Sixth Avenue before turning westbound onto Waverly Place, according to both outlets. The driver has not been caught, and no arrests have been made, police said.
The victim's name has not been released, pending notification of her family, according to AM New York. The investigation is being handled by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad, the outlet reported.
