Esports Scholarships: A New Way to Fund University
As students across the UK prepare for university, conversations about finances are increasingly common. Yet millions of pounds in scholarships and bursary support go unclaimed each year, according to a BBC report, because many students are unaware of the financial help available.
The University of Roehampton is looking to change that with an unusual offering: esports scholarships. The university has handed out more than 100 such scholarships so far, providing financial support to students who can demonstrate excellence in competitive gaming while maintaining their academic performance.
Esports, or competitive video gaming, differs from casual gaming in that it involves spectators and structured tournaments, much like traditional sports. The sector has grown into a serious competitive ecosystem, and universities are beginning to recognize gaming as a way to attract talented students.
How the Scholarship Works
Roehampton's esports scholarship is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Applicants must meet minimum rankings in major competitive games, but the university will consider those close to the threshold if they meet other criteria, such as having large followings on streaming platforms like Twitch.
Scholars are expected to compete in weekly university tournaments and represent Roehampton at in-person events held off campus.
University of Roehampton registrar Mark Ellul said, "This scholarship is about recognising talent in a field that has a growing popularity both around the world and among our students."
From £1,500 to £2,000
The scholarship was initially worth £1,500 but was increased to £2,000 following the strong performance and growing popularity of the university's esports team.
Former esports scholar Cameron Dray discovered Roehampton through the scholarship. Inspired by similar initiatives at American universities, he looked into whether anything similar was available in the UK. "This money was crucial to me as it gave me the opportunity to study in a very expensive city without the need for part-time work," Dray said. He encouraged students to make use of every scholarship, bursary, and opportunity available to them.
Impact on Students
The average graduate in England leaves university with debts of more than £47,500, making financial support particularly valuable. Thomas Cole, an esports player nicknamed Pac who specializes in the racing game Trackmania, said universities offering unique scholarships, including esports, encourages students academically by reducing the level of financial stress they might face.
Tom Allingham, a student money expert from the personal finance site Save the Student, said he did not think there is enough awareness about scholarships.
The scholarship reduces the need for part-time work, helping students with living costs and allowing them to focus more on their studies and gaming. For many, it could be the difference between studying comfortably and taking on additional work to stay afloat.
