Hong Myung-bo resigns as South Korea coach after World Cup exit
Hong Myung-bo has resigned as head coach of South Korea's men's national football team after the team failed to advance to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup. The announcement came at a press conference in western Mexico on Sunday, where Hong apologized to fans and accepted responsibility for the early exit.
"We didn't deliver the results that our fans expected," Hong said, according to BBC News. "Even though I am leaving the national team, I am not abandoning Korean football altogether. I will cheer for the national team from the bottom of my heart and hope that the team will be trusted and loved by the people once again."
The resignation followed a turbulent tournament for South Korea, who were ranked 32nd in FIFA's men's rankings and led by star player Son Heung-min. The team recorded two losses and one win in the group stage, finishing behind Mexico and South Africa, who are ranked 15th and 60th respectively.
South Korea had hoped to qualify for the next round as one of the best third-placed teams under a new rule introduced with the tournament's expansion from 32 to 48 teams, which allows the eight best third-placed teams to progress. That hope was extinguished on Saturday.
The early exit drew widespread criticism at home, with President Lee Jae-myung calling for an investigation into the reasons behind the team's performance. In a post on X, Lee expressed "not just confusion but utter bewilderment at the unexpected outcome" and said the early exit "appears to be a failure of organisation and personnel."
"When favoritism and cronyism take precedence over competence in selecting a commander, the result is as predictable as fire burning paper," Lee added.
Hong, who was a star captain for South Korea during the 2002 World Cup, had been appointed head coach ahead of the 2026 tournament. His tenure ended after the team's failure to progress, with criticism mounting quickly after the final group match against South Africa on Thursday, which South Korea lost 1-0.
