Ayan Broomfield is widely known as the girlfriend of American tennis star Frances Tiafoe, but her own athletic and philanthropic accomplishments tell a larger story. A former collegiate tennis champion, Broomfield has carved out a path that spans sports, entertainment, and community work.
Early Life and Family
Born on August 13, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Broomfield grew up in a family with Jamaican roots. Her grandparents immigrated to Canada from Jamaica, and she has described herself as Black Canadian. Her parents, Paul and Denise, introduced her and her sister Kai to tennis at a young age, despite the financial challenges the sport presented in Canada.
In an interview with Hard Court, Broomfield spoke about the barriers to entry in tennis, noting that playing indoors for six months of the year made the sport costly. “My parents always told my sister and I, look, we might not come from the best financial background–they worked very hard for us, but it was a very expensive sport–but what you can make up for [that with] is your work ethic and hard work,” she said.
Tennis Career
Broomfield attended the Independent Learning Centre in Toronto for high school before moving to the United States to play college tennis. She spent two seasons at Clemson University before transferring to UCLA, where she won the doubles title at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship with teammate Gabby Andrews, defeating Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor of Michigan. She graduated from UCLA in 2020 with a degree in Gender Studies, earning Cum Laude honors.
Before college, Broomfield made her WTA Tour debut in 2014 at the Coupe Banque Nationale.
Relationship with Frances Tiafoe
Broomfield and Tiafoe met in 2015 through mutual friend Victoria Duval, another tennis player. Their relationship became public later that year, and they have been together since. Broomfield has spoken about how Tiafoe’s 2022 US Open run affected their lives, calling it “magical.”
“That six-month period completely changed his life, changed mine and the life of his whole family. It was magical,” she said, reflecting on that time.
Beyond Tennis: Acting and Philanthropy
Broomfield has also worked in entertainment, serving as a tennis body double for actress Saniyya Sidney in the film “King Richard.” In 2024, she founded the Ayan Broomfield Foundation, which launched Ayan’s Aces, an initiative that hosts tennis clinics and social events at major tournaments.
