White Sox place Huascar Brazoban on 15-day IL with lat strain

The Chicago White Sox placed reliever Huáscar Brazobán on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left lat strain, as reported by the Associated Press, ESPN, TSN, WTOP, and the Chicago Sun-Times. Right-hander Jonathan Cannon was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to take his place on the roster.

In a separate transaction, the team placed outfielder Andrew Benintendi on the bereavement/family medical emergency list before its game against the Texas Rangers, and recalled infielder/outfielder Rikuu Nishida from Charlotte, according to the same outlets.

Brazobán, 36, pitched one inning during Monday's 11-2 loss to Texas, allowing one run and one hit, per multiple reports. The issue flared up Monday night, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which noted it was the fifth time Brazobán allowed a run in his last six appearances. Sports Illustrated added that Brazobán had appeared in three games over the previous five days before being placed on the IL.

Brazobán's performance since the trade

Brazobán was acquired from the New York Mets on Aug. 3, as reported by the Associated Press, ESPN, TSN, and WTOP. Sports Illustrated specified that the White Sox sent pitching prospects Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin to the Mets in exchange.

Since joining Chicago, Brazobán has struggled. The Associated Press and other outlets report a 6.30 ERA in 10 appearances with the White Sox. The Chicago Sun-Times gives a slightly different figure, stating a 6.10 ERA since being traded. Sports Illustrated provides more granular August numbers: 7 earned runs allowed in 11.0 innings, with seven walks and a 1.73 WHIP.

The Chicago Sun-Times also noted that Brazobán's arm angle dropped noticeably in August from what had been a breakout season.

Cannon's return to the majors

Cannon, 26, has spent most of this season with Triple-A Charlotte, where he is 5-6 with a 5.18 ERA in 17 starts and five relief appearances, according to the Associated Press and ESPN. Sports Illustrated reports a slightly different stat line for Cannon's minor league work: a 5.18 ERA over 22 games this year, with 21 home runs allowed. The same outlet adds that Cannon posted a 4.49 ERA in 2024 and a 5.82 ERA in 2025 at the major league level.

Cannon appeared in one game for Chicago this season, on April 12 at Kansas City, where he walked three batters, allowed a run, and failed to record an out, according to multiple outlets. Sports Illustrated also notes that Cannon struck out 23 batters over his last three outings.

Sports Illustrated expressed skepticism about Cannon as a replacement, calling his recent track record "iffy" and pointing to his home run allowance as a concern. The outlet suggested the White Sox "can't afford to get too experimental at this point."

Benintendi's bereavement list placement

Andrew Benintendi, 32, is batting .244 with 13 home runs and 65 RBIs in 116 games this season, as reported by the Associated Press and ESPN. He was placed on the bereavement/family medical emergency list before Tuesday's game. The Chicago Sun-Times noted that Brenton Doyle started in center field Tuesday against right-hander Jacob deGrom, as Benintendi was unavailable.

Trade deadline acquisitions under scrutiny

The Chicago Sun-Times framed Brazobán's IL stint within a broader narrative about the White Sox's Aug. 3 trade deadline moves. General manager Chris Getz was quoted as saying: "It was important for us to maintain the high-end talent that we have in our farm system, but add players that certainly can boost our major league club currently, but also have control and guys that can help us for next year as well."

The Sun-Times reported that rival clubs seeking prospects Caleb Bonemer and Billy Carlson were turned away. The new acquisitions — Luis Castillo, Brazobán, Brenton Doyle, and Joey Bart — are all under team control through at least 2027, but the immediate impact has been lacking, the paper said.

According to the Sun-Times, Castillo has a 5.89 ERA in a White Sox uniform and has completed five innings once in four starts. Doyle entered Tuesday hitting .189/.189/.297 in 38 plate appearances, and is the short side of a center field platoon with Tristan Peters. Bart had his hand broken by a hit-by-pitch in his third game with the team, and the White Sox responded by claiming Jake Rogers off waivers, per the Sun-Times.

Bench coach Walker McKinven was quoted by the Sun-Times as saying: "You'd love it if they just hit the ground running. But we have plans on all these guys, a couple things here or there. We acquired these guys for a reason and still bullish on all of them. It's difficult to make subtle changes--even subtle changes--in the season and expect immediate results."

The Sun-Times also noted that José Urquidy has a 5.68 ERA with the White Sox after a rough outing Monday, and that the team has a 10-12 record to start August. Sports Illustrated, meanwhile, reported that the White Sox are 2.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the AL Central lead, and mentioned speculation that Drew Thorpe could be called up, potentially moving Erick Fedde or Urquidy to the bullpen.

Outlook

Brazobán's IL stint comes at a critical point in the season. Sports Illustrated noted that the hope is that the rest on the IL will help him regain his command, as he was acquired to be a key part of the postseason bullpen. The White Sox are running out of time to ensure he can be that piece, the outlet said.
