Gyokeres' Arsenal Future in Question After Two Benchings and Alvarez Speculation
Viktor Gyokeres has been an unused substitute in both of Arsenal's opening Premier League matches, prompting questions about his standing in Mikel Arteta's plans. Gyokeres arrived at Arsenal from Sporting in the summer 2025 transfer window as one of the window's standout signings, according to the Daily Express. His recent lack of playing time has coincided with reports linking Arsenal to Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.
Yardbarker reported on 23 August that Arsenal were reportedly prepared to consider using Gyokeres as part of a package to sign Alvarez, with one claim suggesting the Gunners could offer Gyokeres plus £68.5 million. The possibility of a Gyokeres-Alvarez swap was first reported in June, when reports from Spain indicated Atletico might be open to discussions if Arsenal included the Swedish striker alongside a significant fee.
Gyokeres addressed the speculation, saying he felt "extremely comfortable at Arsenal" following the Gunners' title-winning campaign. However, his two consecutive unused substitute appearances have renewed focus on his situation.
Arsenal were reportedly pushing hard to secure Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. The transfer saga involved Barcelona, but Atletico ruled out selling Alvarez to their La Liga rivals. Alvarez had no intention of moving back to England, according to the Daily Express.
