Alibaba Unveils Wan3.0 Video Generation Model
Chinese tech giant Alibaba introduced its latest AI video generation model, Wan3.0, on Monday, as reported by Times Now. The model can generate videos of up to 30 seconds from various types of content, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and web pages. Alibaba Cloud announced the launch through a post on WeChat, according to Reuters, as cited in the report.
A public beta version of Wan3.0 was released on August 6. Since then, the model has been used in short drama and film production, advertising, marketing, tourism promotion, and music video creation, the report noted. The latest version is positioned to make AI video generation more practical for creators and businesses by allowing them to convert existing material—rather than just text prompts—into visual content.
Competitive Landscape and Alibaba's AI Push
The launch comes as Alibaba increases its spending on AI infrastructure. The company recently announced a $10 billion share placement to fund its growing AI investments. This move follows a reported 75% decline in quarterly earnings year-over-year, which the company attributes to soaring AI-related capital expenditure. The share placement is described as the largest-ever primary follow-on offering by a Hong Kong-listed company.
Wan3.0 will compete with video generation tools from OpenAI, Google, and other firms, as Alibaba seeks to strengthen its position in the fast-growing AI video market. The company has been developing its own AI models under the Qwen and Wan families.
Copyright Concerns
According to The Verge, as cited in the report, Alibaba's Wan3.0 model may face copyright concerns because it promoted at least one video featuring actor Tom Cruise. The report did not provide further details on the nature of the concern.
