Walmart and Sam’s Club to Launch Tap-to-Pay Nationwide by 2026
Walmart and Sam’s Club have announced a significant change to their checkout experience: starting Aug. 24, select stores will begin accepting tap-to-pay payments, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other contactless methods. The companies said the feature will expand to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, with fuel stations following by mid-2027.
In a press release, Walmart and Sam’s Club described the new payment option as part of an effort to make “shopping feel simpler and more seamless from start to finish.” The statement added that tap-to-pay gives customers “another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods,” whether they are using an eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch.
The rollout will be phased, so availability may vary by location. Some shoppers may see the feature before others as the company updates checkout systems across the country. For example, customers at the roughly 250 Walmart locations in New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania will be able to use Apple Pay for holiday shopping once the feature is active there.
A Shift from Walmart Pay
For years, Walmart resisted tap-to-pay technology, instead directing customers toward its own mobile payment system, Walmart Pay, which requires opening the Walmart app and scanning a QR code. Industry observers have attributed this resistance to Walmart’s desire to keep shoppers within its digital ecosystem, as other payment methods like Apple Pay limit the payment information shared with retailers.
Despite that history, the company is now embracing contactless payments. Walmart’s statement noted that the move is about giving customers “more choice and making everyday shopping a little easier — from how they manage their money to how they pay at checkout.”
Walmart Pay will remain available alongside the new tap-to-pay options. Additionally, customers can add certain Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards to their digital wallets to use at checkout.
Rollout Timeline
According to Walmart, the new tap-to-pay option will be available at all U.S. stores and clubs by Dec. 31, though specific dates were not provided. The company also said the feature will be extended to fuel stations by mid-2027. Until then, shoppers may need to check with their local store to see when tap-to-pay becomes available.
