A Mystery in the Night Sky

For weeks, residents of Queensland have been captivated by orbs of light streaking across the night sky below the planet Venus. Appearing around 8pm in the western sky, the lights have sparked online debate, with theories ranging from alien spacecraft to 'min min lights' and defence testing.

Lisa Manteit, a resident of Marian, west of Mackay, said she first thought the lights were drones until she saw others across Australia posting about them online. "I see all these, what look like moving stars, but they sort of swirl around and go in circles and some of them have colour," she told the ABC. "Everyone around here has started watching them every night."

An Unlikely Investigation

Graham Moyle and his Central Queensland astronomy group decided to test the various theories this month. Their conclusion: the lights are satellite flares. "When you do see them, when you watch them, they do look sort of freaky," Moyle said. "Because they just appear out of nowhere and then they silently travel through near Venus and then disappear again. We went through everything and these are all satellite flares."

Their theory found support from an unexpected ally: Philip Giacalone, a retired aerospace engineer who once worked for NASA and is now based in California. Giacalone has been using real-time orbital data to verify the group's sightings. He explained that the phenomenon occurs when satellites in low-Earth orbit reflect sunlight off the underside of their bodies, acting like a mirror floating above the Earth. He noted that the flares can be seen from any location, typically a few hours after sunset, and do not necessarily need to align with Venus.

To help others track these flares, Giacalone has built a free program that predicts when they will be visible from any point on the globe. He says satellite launches are increasing rapidly, at a rate of about 4,000 per year. "That's going to make this problem bigger and bigger, and people are going to be convinced it's something else," he warned.

The Science Behind the Lights

University of Queensland astrophysicist Jonti Horner provided context for why these sightings are becoming more common. He said the number of objects in space has tripled since 2020, with more than 16,000 active satellites orbiting Earth and more than 34,000 additional pieces of dead satellite and other space junk being tracked. About 10,000 of those satellites belong to the Starlink constellation, with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk planning to put a million more into orbit.

Professor Horner acknowledged the benefits of this technology, including improved internet and accurate GPS, but noted that more companies are seeking to launch their own satellites into orbit.

Skepticism Remains

Despite the scientific consensus, not everyone is convinced. Manteit, who has been watching the lights regularly, said she has observed movements that do not match the straight trajectory of a satellite. "They sort of swirl around and go in circles," she said, describing the puzzling behaviour.

Regulatory Response

The Australian Space Agency, responding to the growing number of satellites and the potential for space debris, said it was placing 'greater emphasis' on the safe and sustainable use of space. The agency noted that Australian civil space activities are regulated to include debris mitigation, and it is continuing to make reforms.
