New partnership expands UMG's role
Universal Music Group (UMG) and Apple Corps have announced a new exclusive, long-term, global partnership for The Beatles. Under the agreement, UMG will handle worldwide physical and digital merchandise, licensing, and e-commerce on behalf of the band, building on its existing stewardship of The Beatles’ catalog.
The partnership marks a deepening of the relationship between UMG and Apple Corps, which was founded in 1968 to oversee The Beatles’ creative and business interests.
“The Beatles message has never been more relevant or needed in the world today,” said Tom Greene, CEO of Apple Corps, in a statement. “And we look forward to delighting millions of fans with everything we have planned.”
Sir Lucian Grainge, UMG chairman and CEO, said: “The Beatles embody music’s power to change the world, and that influence makes them one of the most iconic and enduring cultural brands of all time. We’re grateful for Apple Corps’ trust as we deepen our global partnership, while protecting and growing The Beatles' legacy through authentic fan experiences worthy of their artistry.” He added, “As a lifelong Beatles fan, building on the relationships forged over the past 14 years is one of the great highlights of my career.”
Dickon Stainer, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group UK, said: “The Beatles continue to play an unmatched role in putting UK music front and centre on the global stage. This new agreement with Apple Corps will ensure audiences across the world are opened up to their unique genius.”
Fan experience at 3 Savile Row
The partnership begins with the previously announced fan experience, “The Beatles at 3 Savile Row,” set to launch in London in 2027. The Mayfair address was Apple Corps’ earliest headquarters in the 1960s, and the building’s basement served as the studio where Let It Be was recorded. Its rooftop was the stage for the band’s final public performance on January 30, 1969. The band sold the building in 1976 but has since repurchased it for the planned museum space.
The experience will feature seven floors of never-before-seen material from Apple Corps' archives, rotating exhibitions, a fan store, and a recreation of the original studio. Visitors will also be able to relive the iconic rooftop concert, as featured in Peter Jackson’s Get Back, at the location where it happened.
“The Beatles continue to play an unmatched role,” said Stainer, echoing the sentiment of the wider partnership.
Global Beatles Day and upcoming releases
Apple Corps has officially recognized June 25 as Global Beatles Day, making the fan-led celebration official. To mark the occasion, the band re-released the original performance of “All You Need Is Love.”
In addition, UMG and Apple Corps announced an expanded special edition of The Beatles’ 1965 album Rubber Soul, set for release on October 2.
Looking ahead, 2028 will see the release of The Beatles – A Four Film Cinematic Event, directed by Sam Mendes. The project marks the first time Apple Corps and The Beatles have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film. According to one account, Mendes is directing the first script to receive the full blessing of Apple and will use the band’s music, unlike the 1995 film Backbeat.
