A Transatlantic Season Opener
North Carolina and TCU will open the 2026 college football season on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, as part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon ET, with the game televised on ESPN and available for streaming via Fubo, which offers a free trial for new subscribers, as well as on ESPN+.
For UNC, the trip marks the program's first international game. Head coach Bill Belichick, however, is no stranger to playing abroad. During his time with the New England Patriots, Belichick took part in four international games — in Germany, Mexico City and twice in London — and his teams posted a 3-1 record in those contests.
The Tar Heels will be looking to bounce back from a 4-8 campaign in 2025, a season that ended with a 48-14 loss to TCU at Kenan Stadium in Belichick's debut, a game in which the Horned Frogs returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
New Faces on Both Sides
Both teams enter the opener with significant roster changes. UNC brings 60 newcomers, including starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., who will operate first-year offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino's system. TCU, meanwhile, has its own new quarterback in Harvard transfer Jaden Craig, along with new offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis, who previously called plays at UConn.
According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, UNC enters the game as a 7 ½-point underdog, with the over/under set at 51.5 points. The moneyline lists UNC at +260 and TCU at -325. The broadcast crew for the game will be Mike Monaco, Jordan Rodgers and Dana Boyle.
Injury Report and Key Matchups
In a note ahead of the game, the Citizen-Times reported that ACC teams are not required to release availability reports for nonconference games. Belichick was scheduled to hold a press conference on Monday at 11 a.m. ET at the Kenan Football Center, and the outlet indicated that injury updates may be provided by the coach throughout the week.
The Citizen-Times also highlighted a key matchup: UNC's defense will face TCU quarterback Jaden Craig. Last season, TCU piled up 29 first downs, 542 yards and four touchdowns against UNC. The Tar Heels' offense, meanwhile, will need to avoid the kind of turnovers that proved costly in the 2025 opener, when three giveaways directly led to TCU defensive scores.
Prediction: UNC 24, TCU 21
Both the Asheville Citizen-Times and the Fayetteville Observer predict a narrow UNC victory, 24-21. The prediction rests on two factors: a trend in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in which underdogs have won each of the past two games and three of the five contests since the event's inception in 2016, and an improved UNC offense that could provide a breakthrough win for Belichick to start the 2026 season.
