UltraTech Cement to deploy over 600 electric trucks by end of 2026
UltraTech Cement, an Aditya Birla Group company, plans to scale up its electric vehicle fleet to more than 600 heavy-duty electric trucks by December 2026, as part of its efforts to reduce emissions from logistics operations.
The company said in an exchange filing on September 2 that it has signed service contracts with electric vehicle prime mover manufacturers including Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, IPLTech, Energy in Motion and Sany, along with their subsidiaries and other third-party logistics providers, for the deployment of the EV fleet.
The 600-plus electric trucks will transport around 5 million tonnes of clinker and other key materials annually across Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha. Once fully operational, the fleet is expected to reduce net annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,17,000 tonnes and displace the equivalent of 39 million litres of diesel each year.
Green logistics expansion
UltraTech said its electrification strategy covers its supply chain from mine-to-plant movement to inter-plant transportation of clinker and other key materials. The company currently operates more than 850 trucks as part of its green logistics operations, including CNG and electric trucks.
The company introduced CNG trucks in 2021 and electric trucks in 2024, and said it was the first cement company to deploy heavy-duty electric trucks for long-haul transportation of clinker and other materials at scale.
UltraTech Managing Director KC Jhanwar said the expansion of electric mobility in logistics was aimed at decarbonising the company's value chain and supporting its Net Zero commitment. He added that the large-scale transition to green logistics underscores the focus on decarbonising every link of the value chain.
UltraTech, with a grey cement capacity of over 200 MTPA in India, operates one of the country's most complex logistics networks. The company's stock is down 6% so far in 2026.
