UGC Invites Applications for Distance and Online Programmes
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a call for fresh applications from eligible Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) seeking recognition to offer programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and/or Online mode for the academic year 2026-27. The recognition will apply to programmes offered from the January-February 2027 session onwards, as per the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, and its amendments.
The application window for the current cycle is open between September1 and September15,,2026, with institutions required to submit their applications through the UGC Distance Education Bureau (DEB) portal at in. In addition to the online submission, institutions must mail the hard copies of original affidavits and annexures to the Joint Secretary, Distance Education Bureau, UGC,,35 Feroze Shah Road, New Delhi–110001, by September25,,2026.

Year-Round Window for Certain Institutions
The UGC has clarified that the application submission window remains open throughout the year for HEIs entitled to offer Online programmes and for Category-I HEIs eligible to offer ODL programmes. This means institutions falling under these categories can apply at any time during the year, rather than being restricted to the September1–15 window.
The commission has advised eligible institutions to visit the DEB website for information regarding the prescribed application fee and further announcements related to the recognition process.
Application Does Not Mean Approval
The UGC has specifically cautioned HEIs that merely submitting an application does not amount to recognition or approval. All applications will be scrutinised against the standards and requirements prescribed under the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations,,2020,,and its amendments. Recognition will be granted only after the applications meet the stipulated requirements.
