Arrests and investigation

Two men have been re-arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after the body of a missing British soldier was pulled from the River Tyne in Northumberland, according to Northumbria Police. The men, aged 22 and 23, had been arrested on Monday and released on bail before being taken back into custody, as reported by GB News and The Sun.

Liam Potts, a serving soldier with the Coldstream Guards, was last seen at around 12.20am on Saturday, August 15, heading towards Wylam. Concern was raised when he failed to return home the following morning. A body matching his description was recovered from the river near Wylam Bridge on Tuesday, with Marine Unit officers involved in the operation, according to GB News and The Sun.

Liam's family and friends were involved in the search, as The Sun reported. No formal identification of the body has taken place, but his next of kin have been informed.

The investigation

Before his death, police had received a report of a disturbance and subsequent collision involving a vehicle and a group of pedestrians on the bridge. A man and a woman, both in their 20s, suffered serious injuries in the crash. The woman has since been discharged from hospital, but the man remains in hospital, according to The Sun.

Liam was on the bridge at the time of the incident, but was not in the vehicle and was not struck by it, police said. Detectives are investigating whether the incident on the bridge directly led to Liam entering the water. Liam entered the water within minutes of the collision, but the link is not yet established, as stated by Detective Inspector Rachael Rutherford.

"Our thoughts remain with Liam's family during this difficult time," DI Rutherford said. She added that there has been confusion and speculation in the community, that Liam was a popular young man, and that they are committed to finding answers for his family, according to The Sun.

Liam served with the Coldstream Guards and completed his training at Tatterick Garrison, where he played a role in the funeral procession of Queen Elizabeth in 2022, as reported by GB News.

His family released a statement saying: "To our Liam. You may no longer be here beside us, but your presence will never be forgotten. Your family, friends and colleagues have all said the same thing, 'once you met Pottsy, you could never forget him.' You really were the heart and soul of any room."
