Trial Overview

Sally-Anne Bowen, a 65-year-old former chemistry teacher, is standing trial at Harrow Crown Court accused of indecently assaulting two boys in the late 1980s. The allegations date back to when Bowen taught at Christ’s College, a boys’ school in Finchley, north London. At the time, the boys were aged around 14 to 15, while Bowen was in her mid-20s. She faces eight counts of indecent assault, which she denies.

Bowen’s Police Interview

In her first police interview, conducted in January 2015, Bowen described one of the complainants as "a nuisance" and "besotted," and suggested the accusations against her formed part of "a fantasy." Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe read Bowen’s replies from a transcript to the jury. Bowen stated: "He may well have been in love with me but, you know, this is total fabrication." She added that the allegations were "the workings of a fantasy – it’s total nonsense."

The same complainant alleged that he and Bowen had sex "about 20 or 30 times" over several months, often when he visited her home, and that he considered her his girlfriend and believed he was in love with her. Bowen denied this, saying the boy had once followed her home but never entered.

Court Testimony and Allegations

The court also heard about Bowen’s dress and behavior as a teacher. She denied wearing short outfits, and when asked to show the length of her skirts at the time, she placed her hands a few inches above her knees, saying: "They were shorter than I am wearing now – they were not mini skirts." She added that she "wasn't going to dress like Margaret Thatcher," defending her style.

A former pupil, Tobias Oliver, told the court that Bowen "dressed and behaved more like my teenage female friends than the other teachers" and "would wear short, very tight skirts, a tight T-shirt or vest top and a loose cardigan." He described the classroom atmosphere as often straying from chemistry discussions into sexual topics, and said that her mannerisms were "more like what you would see in a Sabrina Carpenter video." Bowen, however, maintained that she was not dressed in a sexually provocative way, that she would not have been allowed to get away with such attire, and that she was "a nice person" who students spoke to.

The second complainant alleged that Bowen and he kissed in a cafe after being "goaded" by other boys, and that he touched her breasts. Bowen said she had no idea who this person she were.

Bowen’s Defense

Bowen denied crossing it with her students, stating, "I was a nice person and students talked to me." She also mentioned that she was regularly the target of inappropriate remarks from pupils as one of only a few young female teachers, but she tended ignored them. Additionally, the court heard that Bowen faced a Teaching Regulation Authority hearing in 2022, though the outcome was not detailed.

Trial Status

The trial at Harrow Crown Court is ongoing. Bowen denies eight counts of indecent assault against two boys. The jury will hear all evidence before reaching its verdict.
