The Detroit Tigers reinstated outfielder Riley Greene from the injured list and recalled right-handed reliever Beau Brieske from Triple-A Toledo before Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. The moves were made possible by MLB's expansion of active rosters from 26 to 28 players on Tuesday, which meant no corresponding roster moves were required, as reported by MLive and Newsweek.
Greene's Return
Greene had been on the injured list since Aug. 12 after straining his right hamstring while running the bases. He made two rehabilitation appearances with Triple-A Toledo, recording one hit and two walks in eight plate appearances, according to Newsweek.
A three-time All-Star who turns 26 this month, Greene is hitting .273 with an .816 OPS in 492 plate appearances this season, according to M Live Michigan. He has 25 doubles and 16 home runs. Newsweek reports Greene has 16 home runs and 54 RBIs through 117 games, with his .816 OPS the highest among the Tigers' regular players. The statistical discrepancy across reports reflects different accounting of his performance at the time of each report.
M Live reports the Tigers were 59-60 when Greene went on the injured list and have gone 4-14 in his absence, scoring three or fewer runs in 12 of the 18 games he missed. Newsweek notes the Tigers have lost eight of their last 10 games and characterize the series against the Twins as a must-win for the club's slim postseason hopes.
