The Detroit Tigers made another roster move before Sunday's series finale against the Kansas City Royals, activating James Outman from the seven-day concussion injured list and designating him for assignment, according to an announcement from Tigers PR. The move came as the team selected the contract of left-hander Andrew Sears from Triple-A Toledo and optioned Enmanuel De Jesus after Saturday's game.

Outman had been on the injured list since Aug. 13 after he was hit in the chin by a pitch against the Cleveland Guardians one day earlier. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 20, according to MLB's official transaction log, but Detroit decided to remove him from the 40-man roster rather than continue that assignment or add him to the active roster.

The roster move was driven largely by the need to create space for Sears, who was expected to make his Major League debut Sunday. The 23-year-old left-hander posted a 2.16 ERA with 67 strikeouts over 58.1 innings in the minors this year.

Outman's Recent Struggles and Road to Detroit

The 29-year-old outfielder had fallen into a limited role, with just six plate appearances in his last 12 games as he was mostly used as a defensive replacement. For the season, he was hitting .172/.235/.318 with the Tigers.

Outman's stint with Detroit began with a waiver claim from the Minnesota Twins on June 11. At the time, injuries had created a need in center field, with Javier Báez and Parker Meadows both unavailable. Across his time with the Tigers, Outman appeared in 45 games and produced a .183/.240/.366 slash line with five home runs and 14 RBI.

Before joining Detroit, Outman had been designated for assignment by the Twins on June 6 after a difficult start to the season. He slashed .156/.229/.250 with no homers and four stolen bases in 70 plate appearances for Minnesota.

Roster Evolution and Outman's Career Context

The emergence of Max Clark, who has taken over regular duties in center field, and Brett Callahan, who has joined the Major League roster as another young outfield option, gave the Tigers more flexibility. This, combined with Outman's offensive struggles, made his spot expendable as the team needed room for Sears.

Outman broke out with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, producing a .248/.353/.437 slash line with 23 home runs and 70 RBI, finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting. However, he posted a .147/.256/.265 slash line in 53 games for Los Angeles in 2024 before being traded to Minnesota for reliever Brock Stewart.

Under MLB's transaction rules, Detroit has seven days to trade Outman or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers. There is a possibility he remains in the organization if he clears waivers.
