Three Years of Sobriety

Tiffany Haddish is opening up about her sobriety journey, writing on X on Saturday, August 22, that she stopped drinking altogether after realizing how much trouble was connected to alcohol. "Sitting in court really opened my eyes," she wrote. "Case after case — domestic violence, child abuse, theft, fighting, Grape — alcohol kept showing up somewhere in the story. And I thought, 'Damn, what would happen if I just never drank again?' So I stopped."

Haddish, 46, said that over three years later, "LIFE IS AWESOME. No more waking up in pain. No more waking up next to ugly people. No more toxic relationships." She added that narcissists really don't like sober Tiffany because she doesn't feed into the mess anymore. "It's actually funny how fast a sober mind will run a toxic soul right up out of your life."

She also wondered what would happen if everybody stopped drinking for just six weeks, asking how many arguments wouldn't happen, how many bad decisions wouldn't get made, and how many people wouldn't end up in court. "I can only speak for me, but giving up alcohol gave me clarity," she wrote. She said she can see her dreams clearer than ever and now believes she's going to make every one of them come true. "Any Questions?!?" she concluded.

According to Us Weekly, Haddish previously announced in May 2024 that she planned to stop drinking "any" alcohol, with quotes about health benefits.

The 2022 Arrest and Dashcam Footage

Haddish's reflection follows her arrest in January 2022 in Georgia for driving under the influence. According to Us Weekly, she pleaded earlier this month as part of a plea agreement to avoid trial, and her driver's license was suspended and she was sentenced to 12 months probation.

TMZ obtained dashcam footage from the 2022 arrest, and it shows a lighter moment: Haddish was more concerned with how her mug shot would come out than the DUI bust itself. In the footage, she tells officers she's worried she'd look like a "crackhead" in her booking photo, saying she's going to be upset if she looks "busted and dusted" because she refused to blow into a breathalyzer. TMZ reports that the mug shot actually turned out pretty good. Haddish also made jokes about smoking weed and said she was super tired.

Plea Deal Details

TMZ reports that Haddish avoided trial and jail time for the DUI by striking a plea deal. Sources with direct knowledge previously told TMZ that the comedian was sentenced to 12 months probation as part of the deal, which also requires her to complete a DUI course, do 40 hours of community service, and stay away from drugs and alcohol except prescribed medication. Her driving privileges have also been suspended in Georgia.

A Second Arrest

Us Weekly reports that Haddish was arrested on suspicion of DUI for a second time in November 2023, also reaching a plea deal after pleading no contest to reckless driving. She was sentenced to probation in that case as well. In the years since her arrests, Haddish has vowed to quit drinking.

Reflecting on her journey, Haddish wrote that giving up alcohol gave her clarity, and she can see her dreams clearer than ever after three years without alcohol. "Now I actually believe I'm going to make every damn one of them come true," she concluded.
