LONDON — Three people were injured in a shooting in Braintree town centre on Monday night, with police arresting one person in connection with the incident.

Essex Police said officers were called to Market Place at around 10:10pm following reports of a shooting. The three injured individuals were taken to hospital, though none are believed to be in a life-threatening condition, according to police.

Detective Inspector Richard Trower said authorities believe the shooting was a targeted attack, not a random act of violence.

"At this stage we believe all those involved in this incident know each other," Trower said. "We do not believe this was a random incident but instead directed by one specific group of people towards another specific group of people."

Trower added that police do not believe the incident poses an ongoing threat to the public.

One person has been arrested in connection with the investigation and remains in police custody, Essex Police said. Officers are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Local residents reported a police helicopter circling the town centre, as well as numerous police and ambulance vehicles at the scene.

Trower said four men or boys, aged in their mid-teens to mid-20s, were seen leaving the area. "Work to identify and locate those involved are ongoing," he said.

"There is currently a large and visible police presence in the town centre and we expect to remain there into the morning as we carry out enquiries," Trower added.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact them, quoting incident 1345 of 31 August.
