Mattawa Museum’s newest escape room, The Feast, invites participants to muster their courage and wits to challenge a notorious vampire, known simply as the Count. As vampire hunters, your team has been captured by the Count’s minions after successfully making your way into his foreboding castle.

Captured and desperate, your team realizes you’re in a dining room, ready to be drained of your blood for a perverse feast to temporarily satiate the Count’s endless thirst. You have one hour to solve the clues to secure your escape. If not, the door will open, and all will be served as the Count’s next meal.

Despite a slight delay starting this year’s escape room, the game has been a hit with patrons.

Storm Delay, Then Success

“We were supposed to start Canada Day, but we had a big storm come through,” recalled museum curator Judy Toupin. “We had trees all over the place. Thankfully, they didn’t hit the museum, but one tree missed Big Joe by inches.”

Big Joe is the large carved wooden statue standing outside the museum. The storm created quite a delay, as hydro was out for days, but by the following week, the escape room was officially opened.

“It’s doing really well,” Toupin said, with plenty of bookings, and those who have participated have really enjoyed the game. The escape room helps the museum raise funds to offset operations and augment programming for visitors. This is its fifth year, and each year has a different theme.

Summer students run the escape room, one of whom, Maya Schelling, came up with the concept and designed The Feast from the ground up.

“She designed all of it, and all of the puzzles,” Toupin said. “She created the storyline and decided how the room is going to look.” So far, many participants have left rave reviews of her work on the museum’s social media page.

There is still plenty of time for you and yours to escape The Feast yourselves. The museum is taking two bookings per day, seven days a week. The fun ends when the museum closes on October 10, and after Labour Day, the game will only run on weekends.
