Rebel Wolves' Debut: A New Vampire RPG

The Blood of Dawnwalker is Rebel Wolves' debut release, and the studio is composed of several developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as reported by Screen Rant. The game is set against the backdrop of the Black Plague in 14th-century Europe, with players taking on the role of Coen as he tries to save his family from a group of bloodthirsty Vrakiri who have taken over the region of Vale Sangora in the Carpathian Mountains. Screen Rant describes the game as a "beautifully written and truly original vampire RPG" that wastes no time distinguishing itself from its spiritual predecessor while also carrying over many familiar qualities.

Narrative and Time Mechanics

The prologue introduces players to the game's unique narrative structure, with several quest options that move time forward slightly, forcing players to choose which quests to pursue and which to ignore. The game features a 30-day timeline cycle that makes each decision feel significant, as nearly all actions advance time. This system, according to Screen Rant, establishes stakes immediately and gives players a sense of how the narrative sandbox works. Over the course of the 30 days, the story unfolds with a balance of sex, horror, and heartbreak, setting it apart among vampire RPGs.

Combat and Skill Systems

Combat in The Blood of Dawnwalker features a Directional Block and an Omniblock system, with three main skill trees: Vampiric, Witchcraft, and Swordmastery. Players can equip four active abilities at a time, choosing between Witchcraft/Swordmastery during the day and Vampiric/Swordmastery at night. The game also includes traversal mechanics such as Planeshifting (walking up walls), Haste (an alternative to a mount), shadowstep, and claw-riding. However, Screen Rant notes that walking around corners with Planeshifting can be clunky, and speed-running with Haste can get caught on rocks or invisible edges.

Stealth and Enemy Variety

The stealth system is clearly implemented, but Screen Rant reports that it makes the 'Death from Above' attack feel useless. Combat encounters tend to become repetitive, and enemy variety is lacking, with approximately 4–5 different dog-type enemies that are nearly identical except for names and aesthetics.

Technical Performance

On base PS5, the lack of a higher-FPS Performance mode wasn't a major issue for the reviewer, but there were notable moments in cutscenes and dialogue sequences with clipping and frame rate drops.

Inherited Elements from The Witcher 3

The Blood of Dawnwalker inherits several criticized elements from The Witcher 3, such as clunky movement, repetitive combat, excessive crafting components, useless consumables, and repetitive open-world activities. Some components from The Witcher 3 were not carried over, including a potion/oil equivalent, unique gear and equipment sets, and a Gwent-style mini-game. Screen Rant notes that Coen's Focus Mode is used in a Geralt-Witcher-Senses style, making quests interesting but sometimes predictable.

Player Choice and Dialogue

Players have multiple dialogue options that shape Coen's development and long-term events, sometimes with limited time to make choices. These systems, along with the day/night cycle and the 30-day countdown, contribute to the game's originality, even as it struggles at times to find its bearings.
