Tesla is moving closer to rolling out its purpose-built robotaxi, the Cybercab, with a launch event scheduled for Sept. 3 in Austin. The company posted a teaser on X over the weekend for an "Exclusive Access" event, and promotional material calls it the "Cybercab Launch Event." An invitation shared by the news site Teslarati says guests will get to "experience the future of full autonomy." Tesla is also promoting a sweepstakes on its website for a chance to attend, telling prospective visitors: "We're celebrating the launch of our Cybercab robotaxi with an exclusive event in Austin — and you could be there."

According to the outlet Electrek, the event is invite-only but will be livestreamed, and Cybercab rides will soon become available through Tesla's existing Robotaxi app in Austin.

The event caps a period of steady groundwork. In February, Tesla posted a photo of what it said was the first production Cybercab to roll off the line at its Gigafactory in Texas.

An unusual vehicle

The Cybercab is a two-seat, purpose-built fully autonomous vehicle. With no steering wheel and no pedals, it is designed to operate without any driver. Amazon-owned Zoox also operates a purpose-built robotaxi without driving controls, but Tesla is putting particular emphasis on the vehicle's lightweight design.

Recent filings with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, first reported by Car and Driver, show the Cybercab has a curb weight of just 3,113 pounds — roughly 700 pounds lighter than the lightest Model 3. The filings list a single front-mounted 219-horsepower permanent-magnet motor and a 48 kWh battery pack, which yields an unadjusted range of 418 miles. The Verge reports that, after EPA testing adjustments, the real-world range is likely to be closer to 290 to 300 miles. The same outlet reports that its 165 watt-hours-per-mile rating would make it one of the most efficient EVs ever certified.

From teaser to service

The Cybercab was first unveiled in October 2024, when Musk said the company planned to begin production before 2027 and sell the vehicle to private buyers for under $30,000. The latest announcement arrives as Tesla expands its Robotaxi service, which launched in Austin in June 2025 using Model Y vehicles and has since extended to other cities in Texas, Florida, and California.

A report from The Information says Tesla staffers were told the rollout will begin with Cybercab rides for employees on public roads, followed by incorporation into the Robotaxi service in Austin. Tesla enthusiasts have recently reported seeing parking lots filled with Cybercabs in Texas, feeding speculation of an imminent launch.

Musk said during a July earnings call that Tesla would likely have autonomous ride-hailing available to about half of the U.S. population by the end of the year. Tesla has said Robotaxi rides are currently available in Texas and Florida.

The competitive landscape

Tesla's push comes as Waymo, the self-driving subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet, operates more than 3,000 autonomous vehicles across more than 11 cities and completes over 500,000 paid rides every week. Electrek estimates Tesla only has about 20 to 30 unsupervised vehicles operating at any given time.

In a notable expansion, the Nevada Transportation Authority has approved permits for Tesla, Waymo, and Uber partner Aviari to operate commercial robotaxi services in Clark County. Tesla's Nevada permit allows up to 5,000 fully autonomous vehicles during its first 12 months.

State laws require many autonomous vehicles in the U.S. to have a human supervisor or driver ready to take over control. Tesla has also been building out its infrastructure to support a larger fleet: Bloomberg reported in June that Tesla filed plans with the city of Austin to expand an existing service center with a "robocar" wash and charging stations.

With the Sept. 3 event set, Tesla is now facing the challenge of scaling up from a handful of test vehicles to a commercial fleet that can match, or at least dent, the dominant player's dominance in the autonomous ride-hailing market.
