A Season of Remembrance: Volunteers to Wear 'Dolly' on Their Helmets
The Tennessee Volunteers football team is ensuring Dolly Parton's spirit remains a constant presence at Neyland Stadium this season. Announced by head coach Josh Heupel, the team will pay a season-long tribute to the late music icon by wearing a commemorative helmet sticker, a tradition that begins with their home opener against Furman.
The sticker, revealed on the team’s social media, is rendered in the Volunteers' signature orange and features a butterfly, a subtle nod to the imagery associated with Parton's Dollywood brand. “Dolly” is written in white across the center in a script mirroring the singer's own signature, creating a personal and lasting tribute.
Heupel: 'She Means a Lot to People Here'
During his Monday press conference, Coach Heupel spoke at length about the decision, framing it as a celebration of Parton's life and legacy as much as a period of mourning. He highlighted the universal pride in her East Tennessee roots and the impact of her philanthropy, which he felt was essential to recognize.
“‘I’d be remiss if I didn’t also talk about the passing of Dolly Parton, and all that she’s meant across the world, to this country, and certainly the Queen of East Tennessee, and a lady that was extremely proud of her roots,” Heupel said. “You look at her impact, just her ability to give back and make an impact to people. Certainly here in East Tennessee.”
Heupel continued, confirming the season-long commitment. “We’ll be wearing a sticker patch on the back of our helmet to recognize her accomplishments and everything that she’s meant and had an impact here on Tennessee,” he said.
A Legacy Woven into Tennessee's Fabric
The tribute is the latest chapter in a long and public relationship between Parton and the university. Growing up in nearby Sevierville, Parton often spoke about her humble beginnings as one of 12 children, which inspired her wide-ranging philanthropic efforts, most notably the Imagination Library, a nonprofit dedicated to providing free books to children worldwide.
Parton's connection to Tennessee was personal and public. She received an honorary doctorate from the university in 2009, where she also delivered the commencement address, and performed multiple times on campus. One of her most memorable appearances came during the 2023 football season when she joined Peyton Manning at midfield to lead the crowd in a rousing rendition of the team's beloved staple, “Rocky Top.”
This tribute ensures that as the Volunteers take to the field, they carry with them the memory of a cultural icon whose impact on their home state is as enduring as her music. Tennessee will look to start the season strong when they host Furman on Saturday in Knoxville.
