Tempo’s Sykes, Morrow ruled out for season
The Toronto Tempo will finish their inaugural season without Brittney Sykes and Aneesah Morrow after both were ruled out for the year with injuries. Coach Sandy Brondello confirmed the news, adding to a season already beset by a rash of injuries.
Tempo's Sykes, Morrow ruled out for rest of season
The Toronto Tempo will finish the season without two key players after head coach Sandy Brondello confirmed Sunday that guard Brittney Sykes and forward Aneesah Morrow have been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
Both players were injured in Toronto's 82-79 win over the Portland Fire in Vancouver on Friday.
“Pretty tough luck this year, isn't it?” Brondello said before the Tempo faced the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday.
Sykes left Friday's game after playing just one minute 31 seconds in the first quarter with a foot injury. She was in just her second game back after missing eight weeks with a left plantar fascia injury. Brondello confirmed that Sykes suffered a different foot injury Friday.
Morrow hurt her left knee midway through the second quarter after getting tangled up with Fire forward Emily Engstler under the Portland basket. Morrow was evaluated by Tempo staff before being carried off the court in tears.
While the ailments will keep Sykes and Morrow out of Toronto's final eight games of the season, neither will require long recoveries, Brondello said.
Injury-riddled season continues
The Tempo (11-25) have been beset by injuries throughout their inaugural campaign. Guard Marina Mabrey (right adductor) missed her fifth straight game Sunday against Las Vegas. The 29-year-old all-star will be evaluated “in a few weeks,” Brondello said, and it is unclear if she will play again this season.
Toronto also ruled out forwards Maria Conde (left calf) and Nyara Sabally (left calf) for Sunday's game.
The injuries have forced Brondello to adapt her coaching approach.
“I suppose right now makes it really easy to rotate, doesn't it? No stress there,” she said. “Look, what can you do? You just go with what you can and be mindful of not overloading them. I think that's important for me. And sometimes there's lineups out there that typically I wouldn't have out there, but I have no other solution.”
Toronto activated forward Ornella Bankole for Sunday's game against Las Vegas.
The Tempo's season concludes Sept. 26 against the Connecticut Sun.

Each row is one claim, attributed to the outlet whose wording states it most clearly. Confidence rates how directly the source text states the claim — explicit and unhedged rates high; hedged, pieced-together, or internally inconsistent statements rate lower. It does not measure whether the claim is true. Status counts the distinct outlets we found asserting it — so a single-source claim can still show high confidence, and a multi-source claim can show medium. Every one of those outlets is named beside the status, so you can check the count against the list. For claims extracted before we began storing that list, the row says so: it names the outlet the claim is quoted from and states that we have not recorded which outlets backed it. Outlets wrote at different times, so a figure that evolves — a casualty count, for example — can legitimately differ between rows; check the "as of" time next to each claim's source.
