Political rivals intensify pressure as Telangana government marks 1,000 days
Hyderabad, September 2: As the Congress-led Telangana government completed 1,000 days in office on Tuesday, political rivals stepped up their criticism, questioning the government's record and its decision to mark the milestone with celebrations.
Telangana BJP chief spokesperson NV Subhash launched a sharp attack, asking what the state government had to show for its tenure and whether it had fulfilled its election promises. "Today, September 1, 2026, the Congress Party has completed 1,000 days in office, and they are making huge arrangements for advertisements, talking to people, media events, and celebrating thousand days in office. The BJP, Telangana, specifically asks Revanth Reddy's government: What is there to celebrate on that? What are the guarantees you have completed? Have you implemented six guarantees, 470 promises, which you made on the eve of the 2023 Assembly elections in Telangana?" Subhash said, as quoted by ANI.
Subhash alleged that the government could be remembered for "1,000 days of 1,000 excuses, 1,000 lies and 1,000 betrayals" rather than for fulfilling its electoral commitments. He questioned the government's employment record, recalling the Congress promise to fill one lakh government vacancies by June 2026. While the state government has claimed around 70,000 posts have been filled, Subhash asked why the target had not been achieved within the stipulated timeframe. According to ANI, the Chief Minister has said the state has filled 72,000 government jobs in two years.
Subhash acknowledged the introduction of free bus travel for women in TSRTC but alleged the scheme had added to the financial burden of the already financially stressed public transport corporation. He also questioned the implementation of the promised ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance for eligible women.
"After 1,000 days, the people of Telangana deserve answers, not celebrations. Can the Congress identify even one of the six guarantees that has been fulfilled in toto? Instead of chest-thumping, the government should explain why so many promises remain incomplete," Subhash said, as quoted by ANI.
Subhash said the people of Telangana would give the Congress government a "royal send-off" in the elections for its failure to fulfil commitments. "Telangana needs delivery, not publicity; accountability, not anniversary celebrations," he added.
BJP releases 'chargesheet' against government
The state BJP unit released a "chargesheet" against the Congress government's 1,000 days in office, titled "1000 Days of Betrayal: The Failures and Broken Promises of Congress Rule in Telangana". BJP Legislative Party leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy said the Revanth Reddy government's tenure is marked by unfulfilled promises, administrative paralysis and financial mismanagement, calling it a tenure of "1,000 lies and 1,000 betrayals" for failing to implement its six guarantees and 420 promises. He said they have remained mere paper declarations, as reported by The New Indian Express.
The "chargesheet" detailed alleged failures across several schemes, including the Mahalakshmi scheme, which encompasses payment of Rs 2,500 per month and a gas cylinder at Rs 500, stating it has deprived every eligible woman of Rs 83,000. It said a proposal to issue Rs 5 lakh collateral-free financial support cards for students pursuing higher and technical education has been a non-starter, and the promise to hike Rythu Bharosa from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per acre did not materialise.
Under Cheyutha social pensions, the promise to double Aasara pensions to Rs 4,000 per month for senior citizens, widows, and beedi workers remains a hollow slogan, and the promise to increase the Divyang (disability) pension from Rs 4,016 to Rs 6,000 has not materialised, it said. On housing, of the 7,73,581 target for the financial years 2024-25 and 2025-26, only 34,985 houses have been constructed. Under Gruha Jyothi, the promise to provide 200 units of free electricity to every household has excluded many, it added.
The "chargesheet" further noted that the Rs 2 lakh loan waiver excluded over 22 lakh farming families owing to preconditions. Against a real agricultural debt burden of Rs 39,500 crore, the government waived only Rs 18,000 crore. The process, it alleged, excluded tenant farmers, cooperative loan holders, and joint-family title holders, forcing them to turn to private moneylenders charging 24-36% interest. It also called the failure to identify and pay Rs 12,000 for landless agricultural workers and restricting the Rs 500 bonus to fine rice varieties a betrayal. Non-payment of fee reimbursement dues of Rs 15,000 crore, unemployment allowance of Rs 4,000, and failure to implement the job calendar have remained on paper, it said.
BRS launches its own campaign
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has launched a separate statewide campaign to expose what it describes as the Congress government's betrayal of the people as it completes 1,000 days in office. According to a release cited by ANI, the party will organise a series of innovative programmes across Telangana for a week from September 2, highlighting the alleged failure of the Congress government to fulfil its promises and the problems faced by different sections of society.
Government pushes back
The Congress government has pushed back against the criticisms, citing welfare and infrastructure achievements over the 1,000 days. According to ANI, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has said the state is providing morning breakfast along with midday meals to 27.50 lakh students. The Chief Minister has also challenged BRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao to a debate in the Assembly, comparing ten years of BRS rule with the 1,000 days of the Congress government.
