Tanzania is renewing its bid to become a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub for Africa, with a delegation attending the CPHI China 2026 International Pharmaceutical Exhibition in Shanghai to attract global investors. According to reports by AllAfrica, the delegation, led by Health Deputy Permanent Secretary responsible for Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Emmanuel Tayari, is promoting the country's improving investment climate and its growing medicine demand to manufacturers and industry partners.
Tanzania's Delegation and Goals
At the exhibition, which one report described as one of Asia's largest pharmaceutical trade fairs, Tanzania is represented by the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Investment Acceleration Taskforce. This unit is meant to promote investment opportunities and engage international manufacturers on setting up operations in Tanzania, according to an AllAfrica report. The delegation is meeting with manufacturers, active pharmaceutical ingredient producers, and contract manufacturing organizations.
Tayari said that Tanzania is aiming to attract large-scale production facilities to improve access to essential medicines across Africa, the same report said. Early interest in the pavilion includes investment in vaccines, biologics, injectables, and pharmaceutical raw materials. The country is positioning itself as a future manufacturing hub for domestic and regional markets.
The reports highlighted ongoing reforms in regulation, investment incentives, procurement of local products, and industrial zone development. AllAfrica quoted Tayari as saying the government is improving the investment climate to attract global manufacturers into drug production, raw materials, and health-related industries.
Market Data and Projections
According to an AllAfrica report, domestic medicine demand is projected to rise from about 131 million packs in 2024-2025 to more than 600 million packs by 2039-2040. The report also said that the Medical Stores Department purchases health commodities worth about 491 million US dollars annually, providing a "strong and stable market." Another report added that the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) has reached WHO Maturity Level 3, which is meant to boost investor confidence.
The government has reduced registration time for local medicines to 60 days and has established pharmaceutical industrial zones in Mloganzila and Kibaha, according to the reports. Tanzania is described as strategically positioned to serve a regional market of more than 780 million people across the East African Community and Southern African Development Community.
broader Context
Tanzania's goal is to expand domestic production, reduce imports, and strengthen its role as a regional supply hub in East and Southern Africa. The government has voiced commitment to fair competition and protection of local industry, urging investors to take advantage of the opportunities outlined at the exhibition.
The CPHI China exhibition is a major event for global pharmaceutical industry players and investors, and it is a platform for countries like Tanzania to present themselves to a wide audience. The participation aligns Tanzania's public procurement with its ambition to attract investment in vaccines, biologics, injectables, and pharmaceutical raw materials.
