A rare chance to sail aboard a piece of maritime history
Seafaring enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to sail on a traditional square-rigged tall ship in Cornwall. For a few days next month, the tall ship Morgenster will offer unique three-hour trips under sail from Penzance harbour.
The ship, launched in 1919 as a herring lugger, now operates as a sail-training vessel. It is rigged so that sails can be set from deck level, allowing passengers to lend a hand to the crew if they wish. Guests may also take the wheel to steer the ship, or simply relax on deck with refreshments from the on-board bar while watching coastal views glide by.
Trips are scheduled daily from Thursday, September 10, to Sunday, September 13, with departure times varying each day. Passengers will board at the inner harbour of Penzance. Tickets cost £55 per adult and £40 for children under 15. Organisers say the sailings are best suited for participants aged 12 and older.
A century of transformation
The Morgenster's history includes decades as a commercial North Sea fishing vessel, wartime service, and a government seizure in the 1970s under false suspicions of pirate radio activity. In 1983, the ship was acquired by Dutch tall ship specialist Harry Muter and his wife Marian.
After a multi-decade restoration, the ship was re-commissioned in 2008 with a classic clipper-brig rig. It now operates out of Den Helder in the Netherlands, participating in major European maritime festivals, the Tall Ships Races, public adventure voyages, and is regularly used by the Royal Dutch Navy to provide sailing experience.
A rig with a storied heritage
The Morgenster's clipper-brig rigging has a notable lineage. It was originally developed by the Americans during their fight for independence, designed for speed and agility to outmanoeuvre heavier British ships. These faster vessels were precursors to the legendary Clipper Ships.
Free to see at the harbour
Between sailing trips, the ship will be open for public viewing at the harbour at no charge. Crew members will be on hand to explain the ship's features and answer questions.
