Sun Pharma and US Government Sign Deal on Medicine Pricing, Tariff Relief
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has announced a new agreement with the US government aimed at improving access to affordable medicines for American patients. The deal, signed during a ceremony at the White House, will see the Mumbai-based drugmaker extend 'Most Favoured Nation' (MFN) pricing to state Medicaid programmes, as confirmed by the company in a regulatory filing on Tuesday.
The commitment to MFN pricing, which ensures a buyer can avail the lowest price possible for a medicine, will also apply to Sun Pharma's future innovative medicine launches in the US market. The company did not disclose other terms of the agreement.
Tariff Relief and Investment Recognition
A key element of the agreement is the recognition of Sun Pharma's investment in the US. The US government has delayed the imposition of Section 232 tariffs on the company's innovative pharmaceutical products by over two years. This move is seen as acknowledgement of Sun Pharma's investments in the country.
Rick Ascroft, North America CEO of Sun Pharma, who represented the company at the White House, stated, "The United States is a key area of investment and expansion for Sun Pharma across clinical development, sales and marketing, and both API and finished products manufacturing."
US Market Significance and Expansion
The US currently stands as Sun Pharma's largest market for innovative medicines, contributing approximately 27% of the company's total global revenue. This agreement comes as the company continues to expand its footprint in the region. Earlier this year, Sun Pharma entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Organon & Co. at an enterprise value of $11.75 billion.
In terms of market position, Sun Pharma holds the second position by prescriptions in the US dermatology segment. The company is also entering new therapeutic areas, including immunology, cutaneous oncology, and ophthalmology, according to the filing. Its global innovative medicines portfolio now accounts for about 22% of total company sales.
Sun Pharma's shares were trading 0.60% down at 1,944.25 on the BSE on Tuesday.
