Curry Speaks on Future with Warriors
Steph Curry made his first public comments Monday since becoming eligible to sign a max contract extension, expressing his desire to stay with the Golden State Warriors for the remainder of his career. Speaking at a charity golf event at the Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club, Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area, as reported by both the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and Yardbarker, "There's no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I'm pretty sure that's going to happen."
The 12-time All-Star and two-time NBA MVP, who has spent his entire pro career in Golden State, also addressed the timing of a potential extension. "The goal stays the same," Curry said, per the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. "Extension stuff, we'll figure that out at the right time. But I'm ready for Year 18. It's kind of crazy that it's been this long, and I'm still trying to play at a very high level to help us win, and I'll be able to do my job."
Contract and Season Context
Curry, 38, will make $62.6 million this season and has been eligible since Saturday to sign a $136.7 million extension that would keep him with the team through age 41, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. The extension would cover the final season of his current contract, which runs through the upcoming campaign.
The comments come as the Warriors look to rebound from a disappointing season. Golden State went 37-45 last year and were eliminated in the play-in tournament for the second time in three seasons, as reported by the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Curry struggled with knee soreness, playing in just 43 games, but still averaged 26.6 points per game and made 39% of his three-pointers. He also broke Michael Jordan's record for the most 40-point games by a player after turning 30.
Team Moves and Outlook
Curry's remarks arrive amid a busy offseason for the Warriors. The team has brought back nearly every major contributor from last season, and has signed Draymond Green, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and De'Anthony Melton to new contracts, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Golden State also agreed to a two-year deal with coach Steve Kerr, who has led the team to four championships.
Curry noted that the contract situation would not be a distraction. "The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we're not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season and the fact that the team we're coming back with has a lot of familiarity," he said, as quoted by Yardbarker.
Training camp is set to begin in Hawaii in September, where Curry will join a team that looks to return to contention. With his commitment to the franchise clear, the focus now shifts to the season ahead.
