South Africa's pace attack has been dealt a significant blow ahead of their home series against Australia, with senior fast bowler Kagiso Rabada ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series and his participation in the Test series that follows now uncertain.

Cricket South Africa confirmed that Rabada sustained a right hamstring strain during training with his domestic side and is in the early stages of rehabilitation under the supervision of the board's medical team. The ODI series, scheduled from September 24 to 30 and beginning in Durban, will proceed without the 31-year-old.

The board said in a statement that Rabada's availability for the three-match Test series against Australia will depend on how he progresses through his rehabilitation, with a decision on his selection to be made closer to the series. This leaves the door open for his return, but the timeline remains unclear.

Rabada's domestic bowling coach, former South Africa pace bowler Allan Donald, told South African media that the injury could keep the fast bowler out of action for up to 10 weeks. That estimate would cast doubt on his readiness for the Test series, which is scheduled to begin on October 9 in Durban, followed by matches in Gqeberha and Cape Town.

The potential loss of Rabada is particularly significant given his record against Australia. In 11 Tests against the Australians, he has taken 58 wickets at an average of 21.39, better than his career Test average of 22.03. He was also instrumental in South Africa's World Test Championship triumph over Australia at Lord's last year, claiming nine wickets in the final.

With South Africa and Australia currently among the leading contenders in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, Rabada's fitness could have a major bearing on a highly anticipated Test battle. The board's statement leaves room for optimism, but thes rehabilitation progress will determine whetherhe lines up for the first Test.
