BJP Gains All 11 Mayoral Seats in Uttarakhand
Srinagar mayor Aarti Bhandari, along with ten councillors, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, a development that gives the party mayors in all 11 municipal corporations in Uttarakhand. The induction took place at the party's state headquarters in Dehradun and was welcomed by BJP state president and Rajya Sabha lawmaker Mahendra Bhatt and cabinet minister Dhan Singh Rawat.
Bhandari, who was Uttarakhand's only independent mayor, was joined by her husband, senior leader Lakhpat Bhandari, and ten municipal councillors, including two representatives from the Congress. The local body elections in January 2025 had left the BJP with mayoral posts in 10 of the state's 11 municipal corporations, with Srinagar the sole exception until Bhandari's induction.
'New Energy' and 'Triple-Engine' Government
Speaking at the function, Bhatt said the arrival of the mayor and ten councillors had "infused new energy" into the party, adding that the BJP would work with renewed strength for a decisive victory in the 2027 assembly elections. Rawat described the development as the start of a "triple-engine" government for the region, referring to coordination between the Centre, state government, and municipal corporation.
The Times of India framed the event as a "ghar wapsi" (homecoming), citing Bhatt's remarks that Bhandari's return would inject "new energy" into the party's local unit and strengthen grassroots presence in Srinagar ahead of the 2027 elections.
Bhandari's Explanation and Gratitude
Bhandari said she was grateful to the BJP's state leadership and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for welcoming her into the party. She explained that her ideological alignment with the BJP had remained intact despite contesting the municipal elections independently due to circumstances at the time. She expressed her commitment to work closely with the party leadership to drive development in Srinagar.
Lakhpat Bhandari, who also joined the BJP on Wednesday, said several people had tried to persuade him to join other political parties, but he remained committed to the political ideology he was associated with.
Development Projects and Membership Drive
Rawat highlighted that a ₹72 crore scheme aimed at providing round-the-clock water supply to the Srinagar municipal area had already been launched. He also announced a major membership drive in Srinagar, with a target of inducting around 1,000 people into the BJP in the Srinagar assembly constituency. The Times of India referred to this as a "secondary joining event," while Hindustan Times reported it as a "major membership drive."
The BJP's new mayoral presence across all 11 municipal corporations is expected to strengthen coordination between the government and local bodies, according to Bhatt.
