New Shimano Dura-Ace groupset spotted at La Vuelta a España
A brand new Shimano Dura-Ace groupset has been spotted on the bikes of Alpecin-Premier Tech at the Vuelta a España. The sighting occurred outside the team bus as riders got underway for stage 1, according to Cyclingnews.
The discovery came after months of speculation about the arrival of a new flagship groupset from Shimano. Cyclingnews noted that prototype Dura-Ace pedals were seen at Paris-Roubaix in the spring, and the latest Dura-Ace R9370 wheels were launched at the end of last month. Escape Collective added that it has been five years since the release of the current Dura-Ace R9200 generation, and that whispers of a new Dura-Ace R9300 groupset have been circulating for a couple of years.
What the photos reveal
Escape Collective, which asked photographer Harry Talbot to photograph the Shimano-sponsored Alpecin-Premier Tech team's bikes, reported that the sighting confirms several assumptions about the next generation of Shimano's flagship group. Most notably, it is 13-speed, and there is still a version with a front derailleur.
Unexpectedly, the derailleurs are still wired to what is likely a central battery, similar to the current R9200/R8100/R7100 groupsets. According to Escape Collective, those aware of Shimano's move to wireless shifting in mountain biking might have expected a similar approach for the road, but the far smaller form factor of the photographed derailleur does not allow space for onboard batteries. While the groupset could be an early prototype, the continued use of Shimano's semi-wireless system — wireless shifters, wired derailleurs — aligns with earlier rumors, Escape Collective reported.
Context of the sighting
Despite the sighting, Escape Collective reported that all of their sources in the know had been telling them that new groupsets weren't happening this year. The tip-off that new Dura-Ace components might appear at the Vuelta a España therefore came as a surprise.
The release of the new Dura-Ace R9300 wheels and multiple sightings of what is assumed to be a matching generation of new pedal had already fueled speculation, according to Escape Collective. Cyclingnews also highlighted the recent wheel launch and the prototype pedal sightings as indicators that a new groupset could be on the way.
