Natural Spider Deterrent: Lavender Oil on Doorways

As spider season approaches in the UK, a simple homemade solution is gaining attention on social media. Cleaning expert Chantel Mila, based in Australia, recently posted a TikTok video outlining five cleaning hacks, one of which focuses on keeping spiders out of the home using entirely natural methods.

Mila recommends wiping doors and door frames with lavender oil to deter spiders, as well as any other obvious entry points. Just a few drops applied to a cloth are enough to produce a strong scent that discourages spiders from entering.

Experts at Snug Scent explain that lavender oil serves as a natural repellent thanks to its potent aroma. Spiders detest the strong smell and generally steer clear of locations where it's been used. The experts stated that using lavender oil in a diffuser or as a spray around the home not only keeps spiders at bay but also creates a calming environment for families, making it ideal for bedrooms and relaxation areas.

Daniel Steward, managing director at Shield Pest Control, said lavender's aroma disrupts spiders' ability to track scent trails, which they use for navigation and communication. This confusion makes it harder for them to find safe nesting spots, discouraging them from staying. He noted that some compounds in lavender oil have mild insect-repellent properties, adding to its effectiveness.

Alternative Natural Repellents

While lavender is the standout recommendation, the cleaning tips also suggest other natural options. A 2018 study linked mint oil and chestnuts to deterring spider settlement in two families of spiders. A homemade peppermint spray can be made with a few drops of peppermint oil, water, and washing-up liquid.

Citrus fragrances, such as orange and lime, are also disorienting to spiders. Blending a few drops of citrus oil with white vinegar and water creates another effective repellent.

The advice aims to keep homes spider-free without resorting to harsh chemicals, making it suitable for households with pets or young children.
