Spicy Chicken McNuggets return to McDonald's Sept. 1

McDonald's announced Tuesday that Spicy Chicken McNuggets are returning to participating U.S. restaurants starting Sept. 1 for a limited time. The fast-food giant's news release described the return with characteristic enthusiasm: "We're so back. And just as spicy as ever," and invited fans to "bring the heat" with "a hot take on our classic Chicken McNuggets."

The nuggets are breaded in a spicy tempura coating made with a blend of aged cayenne and chili peppers. This variant of the chain's iconic McNuggets has made periodic appearances on menus since its debut in 2020, with previous limited-time returns in February 2021 and September 2023, as reported by both M Live Michigan and The Oregonian.

Customers looking to intensify the heat can add McDonald's Mighty Hot Sauce, which features crushed red pepper, spicy chilis, savory garlic and a hint of sweetness. A news release promised this condiment is "everything and more," urging: "Don't wait, get this combo while it's hot."

McDonald's, which operates more than 40,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries, has had success reintroducing past favorites. Earlier this year, its fried apple pie returned to menus. The chain also recently released a seasonal coffee flavor, Caramel Apple Pie, now available at participating restaurants nationwide.

The return of the Spicy Chicken McNuggets is the latest in a series of limited-time offerings, underscoring McDonald's strategy of cycling through nostalgic menu items to generate customer interest. The chain's promotional momentum continues this fall with the spicy nuggets and the seasonal coffee drink, both positioned as limited-time additions to the U.S. menu.
