Incident at Malla Reddy University

A speaker stand collapsed during the pre-release event of the film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups at Malla Reddy University in Hyderabad on Saturday, August 22, leaving several attendees injured. The incident occurred while lead actor Yash was addressing a large gathering of fans and students at the venue in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

According to police officials, some fans climbed onto a flying DJ speaker stand during the event to get a better view, and a group was reportedly performing stunts on it when the structure lost its balance and collapsed. Some of those on the stand fell from a height and suffered injuries. The injured were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Injury Counts Vary Across Reports

Reports on the number of injured differ. Several outlets, citing police, reported that four people, including a student, were injured, with one student suffering a leg fracture and three others sustaining minor injuries. A senior police official was quoted as saying, "One student suffered a leg fracture while three others had minor injuries."

Other reports, however, stated that two students were injured, with one initially reported to have briefly lost consciousness. A report from The Hindu — World identified the injured student as Bhanu Prakash, a 21-year-old third-year engineering student who fractured his leg, and said the other four injured were two students and three labourers from nearby areas, who sustained minor injuries including lacerations.

Police clarified that there was no stampede at the venue, contrary to initial reports, and that the injuries were caused by the falling sound equipment.

Yash Halts Speech to Check on Injured

Yash, who was on stage when the structure collapsed, paused his speech mid-address after noticing the commotion. He asked organisers and security personnel to check on those affected, saying, "Are they okay? Please check." Other reports quoted him as asking, "Is it okay there? Please check... be careful. Are you safe?"

The actor again halted the event when he noticed other fans attempting to climb onto other speaker stands, urging them to get down for their own safety. He resumed his speech after being informed that the situation was under control. The event continued and ended without further disruptions.

Police Register Case

Cyberabad Police registered a case against the management of Malla Reddy University and the event manager in connection with the incident. The specific sections of the case were not disclosed. Police said they were examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and would take action against the student who climbed onto the sound box. Some reports initially indicated that no police complaint had been filed, but later reports confirmed the registration of a case.

Questions Over Crowd Management

The incident raised questions about crowd management and safety arrangements at large-scale film promotional events. Police had reportedly asked attendees to move back from the stage before the event due to overcrowding concerns, but the crowd moved close to the stage despite these requests. Videos from the venue showed some attendees climbing onto structures around the event area.

The event drew a massive crowd, with more than 65,000 fans reportedly attending, according to Deccan Chronicle. The film's team, including Yash, Kiara Advani, Rukmini Vasanth, Huma Qureshi, Akshay Oberoi, and Sudev Nair, were present at the event.

Film Details and Advance Bookings

Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, directed by Geetu Mohandas and written by Yash and Mohandas, is billed as an action-thriller saga set in Goa between the 1940s and 1970s. Yash plays Raya, a gangster, in the film, which also stars Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Rukmini Vasanth, and Huma Qureshi. Produced by KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations, the film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on August 26 in multiple languages, including Kannada, English, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam.

The film's advance bookings have reportedly crossed ₹18 crore, with three days remaining before its release. The trailer was released earlier this month.

Yash Defends Film Amid Backlash

At the event, Yash also addressed backlash over the portrayal of women in the film's trailer, defending director Geetu Mohandas. He said, "This film's director is also a woman. For us men, to achieve something in life, it is one level of effort. For women, it is double the effort. Society may not accept it." He added, "There is a voice for women in this film, unlike how it is coming across in the trailer," and said that all girls would have a blast watching the film.

Perspectives on Campus Promotions

The incident has also sparked a debate about film promotions on college campuses. Producer Dil Raju said, "These days, the youth audience is very important for a film's success," explaining the commercial logic behind campus promotions. Preeti Reddy, Vice-Chairman of Malla Reddy Institute, said, "Film promotions are easy for any producer or any distributing agency to do inside a campus because the students are all there rather than keeping it somewhere else." She noted that such events require serious security and crowd management measures.

However, actor-director Sasikumar has taken a stand against film promotions in educational institutions. Filmmaker Rahul Ravindran said, "What is crucial in the first two or three days of a film is attaining that critical mass where enough people have watched it for word of mouth to spread." Students expressed mixed views, with Chandana Sahithi saying, "College is also about experiences outside the classroom," and A. Hasini saying, "I actually like film promotions happening on campus."
