Romanian F-16 destroys drone near Black Sea gas project; president blames Russia

A Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed a marine drone near the Neptun Deep gas platform in the Black Sea on Thursday (August 20, 2026), prompting President Nicușor Dan to blame Russia for the incident. The drone, which Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță said was 'loaded with explosives,' was spotted by a commercial vessel at 6:28 a.m. local time (0328 GMT), hundreds of metres from the offshore gas project and 80 nautical miles east of Constanta, according to a defense ministry press release. The Neptun Deep project, owned by OMV Petrom and state gas producer Romgaz, is Romania's largest natural gas development and is expected to make Romania the EU's largest gas producer when it comes online in 2027. NATO allies have previously raised concerns about protecting the project from Russian drone attacks. Earlier this month, Romanian army divers destroyed two Gerbera-type drones drifting in the exclusive economic zone near the project. NATO states Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey have neutralized more than 150 mines drifting across Black Sea trade lanes in recent years and have agreed to expand a joint task force to include missions to protect critical infrastructure.

Spanish F-18 downs drone in separate incident

In a separate incident on Sunday (August 16, 2026), a Spanish fighter jet shot down a drone that had breached Romanian airspace near the border with Ukraine and Moldova. The interception, carried out by an F-18 at 5:01 a.m. (0201 GMT), was confirmed by Romania's defense ministry. Debris fell in an unpopulated area of the Galati region, near the Ukrainian border. Spain's Defence Ministry praised its air force's 'outstanding professionalism in the defence of European airspace.' Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares spoke with his Romanian counterpart Oana Toiu, who thanked the pilots. NATO Air Command said the mission involved two F-18s, part of a Spanish contingent of around 200 personnel and 11 aircraft based in Romania. This was the fourth drone destroyed in Romania since the start of Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In a separate development on the same day, drone debris was found in the Black Sea off Romania's constanța coast. In July, Romania expelled a Russian embassy employee after drones repeatedly breached its airspace, having shot down three drones on three consecutive days before the expulsion. Authorities have reported finding drone fragments on Romanian soil several times since 2023 following Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports along the Danube River. Similar incidents have been reported elsewhere on NATO's eastern flank, including in Poland and the Baltic states. On Friday (August 14, 2026), NATO said Italian jets shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace.

Context of drone activity and response

The incidents come amid a broader pattern of unauthorized drone activity across eastern Europe as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine. Romania shares a 382-mile land border with Ukraine. Early Thursday, an aerial drone crashed into an unpopulated area in Romania during Russia's latest strikes on Ukraine, falling four kilometres northeast of the village of Grindu with no casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday urged a global response to Moscow's 'escalation' of the four-year war after Russian bombardments killed at least 16 people in Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight.

In early June, a Ukrainian maritime drone exploded in Romania's Black Sea port of Constanta without causing casualties. Kyiv said the drone had been knocked off course by Russian electronic interference. NATO has shot down four aerial drones in Romania recently, with the latest incident happening during last weekend.

The Russian embassy in Romania did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
