Spain has specified the financial threshold for its non-lucrative residency visa, which is designed for foreigners who wish to reside in the country without engaging in paid employment. According to details published by the Spanish Consulate and reported by Tuko News and Yen News, applicants must prove they have €33,600 (approximately KSh5 million) to qualify for the permit. This amount is set at 400% of Spain's IPREM, the public income reference index, which currently stands at €8,400 per year.

For each dependent included in the application, an additional 100% of the IPREM—€8,400 (about KSh1.25 million)—is required. The calculations in reports use an exchange rate of roughly KSh149 per euro.

Retiree Requirements

Retirees face specific conditions under the non-lucrative residency permit. They must be active recipients of a State pension or a life annuity, and that income must be paid in a convertible currency. This requirement is intended to ensure that pension funds can be transferred and used within Spain's financial system.

Documentation and Restrictions

All applicants, regardless of category, must submit three months of bank statements along with a copy of their most recent tax return. Financial documents must carry an official stamp or seal to be considered valid.

Applicants with an active loan or mortgage in the United States are not eligible for the permit at the time of application. Additionally, self-employed applicants must submit a notarized affidavit confirming that they will not undertake professional or business activities while living in Spain under the terms of the permit.

Exemptions from CCSE Test

Yen News reported that Spain has announced two categories of foreign nationals are automatically exempt from sitting the Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain (CCSE) test: minors and individuals whose legal capacity has been formally modified.
