Social Security September 2026 payment schedule

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will send out September 2026 Social Security retirement benefits according to its standard monthly schedule, with payments going out on three Wednesdays later in the month, as reported by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

Regular Social Security retirement benefits are distributed based on the recipient's birthdate. According to the SSA's 2026 payment schedule, beneficiaries with birthdates from the 1st through the 10th will receive their payment on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Those with birthdates from the 11th through the 20th will be paid on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and those with birthdates from the 21st through the 31st will receive their payment on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

People who began receiving benefits before May 1997 will be paid earlier, on Thursday, Sept. 3, per the SSA's schedule.

The SSA has published its yearly distribution schedules for 2026 and 2027 online, which recipients can use for budgeting purposes.

SSI recipients: September payment and October double payment

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive their September payment on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as reported by both the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

SSI is a separate program from Social Security retirement benefits, funded differently, and provides monthly payments to people who are age 65 or older, blind, or living with a qualifying disability and who meet strict income and asset requirements. Some people receive both types of benefits.

Looking ahead, SSI recipients will receive two payments in October. The first will arrive on Oct. 1, and the second will arrive on Oct. 30, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. The Oct. 30 payment is actually the November 2026 SSI payment because Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday.

When the first day of a month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the SSA generally issues SSI payments on the preceding business day, according to SSA policy, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette listed the SSI payment schedule for 2026 and early 2027, which includes: Sept. 1, 2026; Oct. 1, 2026; Oct. 30, 2026 (for November); Dec. 1, 2026; Dec. 31, 2026 (for January 2027); Feb. 1, 2027; March 1, 2027; and April 1, 2027.

Upcoming changes to payment delivery

The SSA plans to fully transition to electronic payments by the end of the year, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported. Additionally, for recipients who use Direct Express debit cards, Fifth Third Bank is replacing Comerica Bank as the financial agent for the program, the SSA said in a May 18 notice.

The majority of beneficiaries already receive payments electronically. The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported that 99% of beneficiaries are paid electronically.

If recipients do not receive their payment on the expected date, the SSA suggests allowing three additional mailing days before contacting the agency.

How to apply or get help

Adults who qualify for SSI generally do not have monthly wages above $2,073, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported. Those eligible for SSI can begin the application process online, in person, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

For those seeking local assistance, there are 30 Social Security Field Offices, two Disability Determination Service offices, and three locations for the Office of Hearings Operations in Massachusetts, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. To find the closest office, recipients can use the Social Security Office Locator.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette also noted that everyone can start receiving reduced Social Security benefits as early as age 62, but waiting until full retirement age results in a larger monthly payment. Full retirement age has gradually increased, rising by two months for each successive birth year; for example, those born in 1958 reach it at 66 years and 8 months, and those born in 1959 at 66 years and 10 months. For anyone born in 1960 or later, the full retirement age is 67. Recipients can calculate their full retirement age on the SSA website.
